I'm working on a map that involves an emancipation grill that allows cubes to go through it. The problem is that people say they get too confused thinking the grill will destroy the cubes. Does anyone know how I could tell the player you can bring the cubes through?

You could use ATT text to speech to do a voice saying you can, or just use game_text.

game_text is annoying as shit, please don't use it.

Think of some other method to allow the player to bring a cube through. Maybe a small side slot that they can slide the cube through next to the fizzler, and they pick it up on the other side?

What they said. In Portal Prelude they changed the colour of the grid from blue to green, with a voice over from some 'employees' that it won't destroy the cube.

Or just add a very small rooom at the start of the map, with nothing else in it than a cube, a button and a fizzler in the middle. This will also have the effect that all ignorant dumbasses will quit immediately.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Maybe a bright green color or something. I just hope the creator of Portal Prelude doesn't hunt me down :\

You could put a thin grid on the floor, that way the player won't emancipate the box (unless they drop it on the grid) and it gets rid of their portals.

Maybe you could use signs on the wall beside the grid. For instance, a picture of a cube, with an arrow above it pointing forward (up). I think if I saw that I'd interpret it as "bring the cube this way."

I also like the suggestion above of putting a cube-sized slot in the wall.

I like the idea of changing the color, and using signs with arrows and all that, but you could make it even more obvious by doing this:
Right after the player gets out of the entrance elevator, before the rest of the test, put a cube dropper in a small room behind glass, so that the player can't get to it. Put a floor button under the cube dropper so that the cube will drop right onto the button from the dropper. But in between the floor button and the dropper you could put one of those green fizzler things that only fizzle your portals. Make it so that the dropper is activated by the player pressing a pillar button using the E key.
So the pliayer will see the button, and press it with E. The cube wll drop through the green fizzler and onto the floor button. That button it drops onto will then open a door, allowing the player to proceed onto the actual test. That way, players will instantly be able to tell what's special about the green fizzler. People usually learn best through demonstration.

I'd like to see a Fizzler that changes between cube destroying and player blocking.

You could have two in the same place with different flags and then activate/deactivate them with logic_relays

Thanks for all the help guys! I just released the map, and I went with msleeper's idea. It seems to work out perfectly. As Gaben would say, "Please let me know what you think"

A non-emancipation grill? Sounds like you wanted to create a Discouragement Field.

He means one that cleanses portals but doesn't destroy items. He went with a hole in the wall instead.
