What materials can a portal be fired on

Hi guys, used Hammer for 2 years for TF2, im now going to give Portal a go. Noob question, how do you know what materials can be used that a portal can be fired on, thanks.

All of the white walls are Portalable. As far as I know there is no way to see if they are portalable, but you can probably fine some sort of filter for it. Like portalable. xD
Also, there is a nodraw_portalable texture.

Generally, white/bright textures are portalable, dark/black textures are not. Exceptions are light-emitting textures and maybe a few of the underground metal ones. It should be obvious which ones are and which ones aren't.

It doesn't really have to be entirely white either. There are some walls with a light blue base that are portalable.

I recently discovered that at least one type of carpet can have portals placed on it.
