I heard of a miraculous "Portal In-Game Map Editor" today, and I'm wondering.... is it as good to use as the Hammer World Editor? If you don't know what I'm talking about, here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZE0k_p1_lo

So I ask again, is it as good as hammer world editor?

No.

No no no.

I haven't even looked at the video and I'm 97% sure it's about po_edit, in which case you should put it out of your mind and never ever look at it again. It is a mildly good/interesting idea in concept but it falls short in so many ways if I list them I might exceed the phpBB character limit.

1) There's no lighting at all, meaning everything is fullbright and therefore ugly.
2) There is no optimization whatsoever, meaning performance is horrible except in the simplest of maps.
3) Since it's basically a prefab placer you can't do anything except the simplest puzzles and most basic brushwork and no custom entity I/O at all.

And that's just a teaser, but do you really need more? In short, learning to use Hammer will make you not only a better mapper in several games but a better computer user in general.

From the video, just looks like someone is making use of Garry's Mod. as you can make portal and portal 2 related maps within Garry's Mod.

Yep, looked at the video and it is po_edit. It's a BSP that you play in Portal and it basically allows you to place prefabs.

But again, for the reasons above, do not even touch this. Learn to use Hammer.

It's sometimes also EASIER to use Hammer to test map ideas than to use po_edit. It is a nice idea and the modder(s) who did it obviously put a bit of effort into it but in practice it's just not good enough.

Tool for n00bs.

It's impossible to create professional-looking maps using this tool.
