I know this is a horribly simple question, but how can I select a bunch of stuff in one swipe in the 2D views?

Simply by draggin a selection box around the brushes/entities/props you want to select.
You can adjust your selection box in all the 3 2D views.

Yes it's Enter.
You can also set a Hammer option to always select immediately after dragging out a rectangle, similar to the lasso-select in most 2D editing programs.
(But then you can't select a 3D box; your selection range will always be 'infinite' in one direction.)
