Portals placed between portal surfaces

Is there any workaround for this bug? It has apparently been around since Portal 1, but haven't seen any recent info about it.

I have two portalable surfaces separated by a 32-unit metal strip, on the same plane. However, a glitch causes portals to completely ignore unportalable surfaces 32-units or less, so the portal just gets placed on the metal tiles.
I don't want to make the metal strip thicker or it would get messy. Is there anything else I can do?

You could make use of info_placement_helper entities, to direct the portal away from the metal surface and onto the portable surface.

Isn't this what func_portal_bumpers are for?

Placement Helpers would initially work, but they can be overwritten by firing the portal twice.

The problem is, func_portal_bumpers only work if the surface isn't portalable, and the game thinks mine is, so...

I just tried this out, although I couldnt get portals on the metal stip even without the bumpers, I think bumpers would help.

Another idea, not the best, would be to set the metal strip 1 unit above the surface so there is no flat surface anymore.

Yes probably not the best idea. Try using a portal cleanser if all is lost.
