View in layers?

I have built a map with 3 mazes, stacked one above the other. Stupidly I did not keep diagrams of each level. Now in Hammer I cannot see what each of the mazes looks like. Is there some way to view each of the stacked up layers separately without actually pulling them apart again? Thanks for any help!

If you make separate visgroups consisting of the brushes for each layer, you can turn the layers on/off. It might be tedious to set up, but it should work. Maybe start with the top/bottom layers, then you can turn them off to tackle the middle one without having to work around them.

To set them up I'd suggest selecting the bottom-top height of a layer in the side view, then dragging it all the way around in the top view. After that, press enter and turn it into a new visgroup with the button up top.

You could highlight the one you want to look like by selecting it, so on the 2d view it appears red and stands out from all the other ones?

Yes but if you have to keep everything selected you can't really work, whereas if you have visgroups for different layers/sublayers you have much less to look at, at a given time.

I am completely aware that this could be a really stupid question, but stuffing around with visgroups wont affect visleafs will it?

Nope. Visgroups are only in-hammer. However, if you compile with one or more visgroups off, anything in those visgroups will not be compiled, so make sure you have everything visible in hammer before you compile.

Thanks very much for the discussion. Now I feel like I didn't totally blow it and have at least half an idea what I'm doing! On with the learning and creating!
