I have run maps before but now I cant. but only if I make new maps.If I load an old map that would run then edit it and overwrite the save then I can run it but if I make a new map from scratch and save it it wont run.

in the launcher screen it says entity [entity name] Leaked!

then at the bottom it says

LoadPortals: Couldn't load [map file location]

the weird thing is that at the end of the [cant load file] it says the file is in a .prt format but I saved it as a .vmf because that is the only choice I have for what to save it as.

I think I may have solved it. All I did was add the rest of the walls and a ceiling so it was completely covered and now it works.

NO. You never ever ever cover your map in a box, and that's what it sounds like you're doing.

If, however, you simply meant you closed a room that was previously open to the void, then sorry; I just had to make sure I'd drilled that down your throat. Now then, I'd recommend you look at the page on the VDC discussing leaks; it doesn't sound like you're too familiar with them, and you should be; they're you BEST friend. Not. Also, the .prt file is something completely separate from the .vmf file; don't worry about it too much.

yea I didnt know that I couldnt have any part of the map partially open. my map had a wall missing and no ceiling cuz it was basically just for testing purposes at that point

what do you mean by not build a box around it. are you saying like do not make a giant hollow box around the entire map but still having some open rooms?

Yes, we are; you must NEVER do that. It causes all the problems a leak causes but without the leak itself.

exactly what problems do leaks cause? just being able to trap your player because if you fall there is no way back up?

Please click "load pointfile" in the menu and find where the red line takes you...

You dont do it because you dont do it. The only time you should have a massive box is when you are making a BTS outdoorsy area, and when you are doing that you will have to do it properly with area portals and hint brushes.

i understand. I was just practically brand new to map making and I didnt know that a map wil never run if it is not properly closed.

Fair enough. Also constructing you map to a grid size of something like 32 or 64 also helps prevent leaks. This also might be of help for a early beginner. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PIiPWqbU_I
