using hand gestures to fire portals and not a gun

is it possible for a model to fire portals using their hands instead of having to use a portal gun? I just wanted to ask since I want to add the feature to a humanoid model and have individual portals open for each hand. for example blue portal, left hand (left click) and orange portal, right hand (right click).

Yeah you can
Just decompile the models,
Then port them to 3rd max or Maya
Then change the animation by moving the skeleton
Then export and compile
Rescript the qc file
Compile the qc file
Put the texture file in the right directory
Then put the model in the right directory
You're done

P.S the fire gun animation uses 2 hands

that would take too long. isn't there anyway of doing a custom animation using my kinect? also what do you mean by not replacing the old model? the model itself will be a totally different one from chell but with the same bones.

I thought you were going to replace chell.

well yeah I am gonna replace chell but I was thinking kinect would make it easier to edit the hand gestures since doing it manually would take ages.

It would not be with the same bones. It would be the same bone NAMES for the hands, but a different model which YOU would have to make, and a UV map for that model, and a texture for that model, and bone hierarchies, and the animation, and the rescripting of the .QC file, and then the recompiling... overall it's a lot of work. This is why Valve had so much work putting 10 weapons into HL2.

I remember someone made a hand model for the portal gun for the first portal. Perhaps you can find this and intergrate it in. (unless you already made the hand and the animations).

well I already have the player model but I want to use hands instead of using a portal gun. I'm having trouble finding the example you mentioned. I want to use each hand for a different coloured portal. Any idea of what specific models are needed to edit to get that effect?

sorry if this topic is old. I saw the examples but the main issue I still run into is working out how to use seperate hands.
