Elevator instance problem

I think this problem applies to all of my instances, but whenever I try to put one in, such as an entrance elevator, I don't see it. So, I save and exit and reopen. However, I still can't see it. Then, I try to compile and it says "Could not open instance file instances/turbine_elevator/arrival_elevator_a4_base.vmf"
I tried verifying the integrity of both P2 Authoring tools and P2 itself as well as completely reinstalling P2 Authoring tools, none of which worked.

Soooo How do I get my instances to work?

Here are my configurations, they look the same as yours, though I'm not really sure what I am looking for. I do have steam installed on my D drive (secondary HDD) and not my C drive, I don't know if that makes a difference or not by something possibly defaulting to a C drive.

If you go to the instance: what path do you see?
So for example do you see something like
VMF: instances/underground/test_dome_exit_lift_01.vmf
or do you see a longer path?

If it is a longer path, try to make it a short version.
Other than that I don't have any clue =(

I assume you're talking about the value for the VMF Filename in the func_instance itself. If that is the case, this is what I have:
instances\turbine_elevator\arrival_elevator_a4_base.vmf

yes, that was what I was talking about.
well, that path seems good...
what about your registry values?
(go to windows -> regedit. then to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Hammer\General )
What does Directory say?
(For me it's C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\portal 2\bin with a 64-bits windows, 32 bit would be Program files without the (x86))

Other than that I'm out of suggestions

This is what I have, but steam is installed on my D drive. I think if we can't figure it out, i'll just uninstall everything and reinstall it all on C.

Try to change the d to a capital D?
It sounds stupid but those are the little frustrating things that could make a difference

There's this text file located in the
Steam/common/portal 2/bin
And there should be a text file for gameCONFIG.txt
Just edit it to your d drive and there you're done.
D or d doesn't matter.

I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to be editing to 'd'. This is a picture of the gameconfig (i haven't changed anything)

GameConfig.txt is the same that the settings in hammer show.
Since your settings in hammer are the same as iWork's settings (and mine) that shouldn't be the problem.

What version of windows are you running by the way?
COULD it be possible that windows needs permissions to run stuff in that folder and hammer doesn't have access?
If you're running windows vista or 7, try to run hammer as admin and try again.

That's all I can do at the moment, I really need to get some sleep now...

I'm running windows 7. I retried running steam as admin (not sure how/if I can do it for hammer specifically. But it didn't help.

tried that too, still no good. Is there an easier way of completely removing steam and all it's programs than manually going in and deleting all the files in regedit and program files?

Just go to steam, uninstall all your games and then go to control panel and unistall steam itself?

Is it any instance or just elevator? If only elevator what would happen if we uploaded the instance here?
