Would it be possible to fizzle any portals once the panel rotates down? See here.

In portal, I fizzled portals with making a prop_portal in a small room and when a player press a button the portal fizzles. It also worked with player placed portals, try it.

Thanks for the reply... but I scrapped that idea. Though I'll try that the next time I get something similar.
