n00b Q: Starting a map - can't create a Portal Mod

Folks:

Please be gentle, first post

I've read most of the EP2 FAQ's related to creating mods. If I use the Source SDK with no launch paramters, then select "Portal" under "Current Game" then go to "Create a Mod" I get a message box that says:

Warning: The source code distributed with this version of the Source SDK is not compatible with the 'Orange Box' version of the Source engine. Mod source code compatible with the Orange Box will be available in an upcoming release".

If I add the -engine EP1 then I can create mods, but not with EP2 / Portal.

I want to make some Machinima so I need to have some custom content; it's going to be a movie like "Cube" but with a Portal Flavor. So I'll need to import about 8-10 new models. I mean, poor Kleiner needs an acting break

So ... how do you create a Mod based on Portal? Are we just creating custom maps and loading those, instead of a full Mod?

You cannot make a mod based on the Portal code yet, and probably never will be able to.

All that can be done with just custom maps, no actual mod is needed.

We are only making maps, Valve haven't updated the code to allow mods for portal yet, The single guy that is working on it must be working his fingers off. Just make a map

Well, I'm making a Machinima. I guess I could get by with just a Map, but I'd prefer to make a Mod.

Regarding them eventually creating mods: It's an option in the drop down though, and I'd bet that you could make a mod based on EP2 eventually.

So you guys just make maps then, not mods?

P.S. I'm sure people have thought of this, but could you just imagine Death Match with portals ... I was actually hoping for a cooperative multiplayer version of the single player game, makes filming a Machinima a little easier.

Right, Mike must be working pretty hard, if the code's a lot different there could be a lot of deleting / moving / merging.
