Other people's maps in hammer

Can you take a map made by someone else in the Workshop and look at it in Hammer?

You could. For this you have to decompile the map with this tool: https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/BSPSource

Some people don't like that, though. It's better to ask permission first, and they'll usually give you the source code (which is much easier to look at--it has instances and comments).

Decompiling the map can be useful, but usually it gets messy.
I usually have visgroups, objects grouped, instances and more tricks to make my maps easier to see everything in my map, which get removed in the .bsp file.

That's why asking for the .vmf file is often a better idea :smile:
