Advanced Hammer tutorial
Let me introduce myself. My name is NeXT-Gen_P0rtal, but, if you want, you can call me NeXT-Gen. Ever since I got Portal 1 for free last year, I've been hooked. I've recently become interested in mapping, and quickly found the PTI editor too limiting. I complete Valve's Hammer tutorial, and that's all good, but didn't really teach me what I want to know. So my question is this: Are there any Hammer tutorials that go so far as advanced things such as logic gates, custom models and textures, skyboxes, etc.
I thank you for any answers.

Thanks! I think that's what I was looking for. But, It seems to me that these aren't specific to Portal 2, correct? I have to figure out how to apply these to Portal 2 models and maps?

Probably trolling right?

The hammer editor is used for basically all valve games:
* Half-Life 2 + episodes
* L4D 1+2
* Portal 1+2
* Team Fortress 2
etc.
If you download the portal 2 authoring tools from steam you will have the default assets for portal 2. Importing anything new is basically the same in each of those games.
Now to read up more on this, and hopefully come out with a test map soon...
Oh, and read this and don't come back until you've finished it. You will be tested on this material. http://www.optimization.interlopers.net/

Why would FourthReaper think I'm a troll? I'm just a curious kid who's clueless about Hammer.
Oh, sorry then.
I was just surprised by you questions as I thought it fairly easy to recognise that it was a portal 2 specific link msleeper gave you. But that's my bad maybe.
About the quiz, I like the idea, though people should be able to check the forum for help, ofcouse, because sometimes the VDC, youtube and/or interlopers just doesn't cut it. And while I like xkcd, I think we should still allow 'noobs' at hammer the chance to post, for feedback and/or questions. No matter how much trash you might get with that, it occasionally contains a gem or two. IMO.

Ah, I see. It's okay.
My second question was about the link msleeper referred to on that page. It had a bunch of functions and gobbldey-gook, with a list of games on the side. I just wasn't sure what it was all about.
npc_msleeper_boss wrote:
Did you even look at the "gobbldey-gook"? Because those are general, game inspecific tutorials for Hammer.
Yes, I have. When I posted the question, it WAS "gobbldey-gook", because I hadn't read much it. Now I have, and it's starting to make sense.
EDIT
Wait, huh? I didn't link you to the general Level Design category, I linked you to the Portal 2 Level Design category. The same link that's at the top of the site here. Not that reading the general Level Design tutorials is bad, but I didn't refer you there.

Firstly, in the quoted quote, it seems that "kid" is the operative word in that sentence
And ofc you could read the forums or use the IRC chat before taking the test (without registering), you can right now.

Yeah it's amazing how reading turns gibberish into knowledge.EDIT

I would have read more, but I "had" to go to bed. Parents, yeesh.
Well, you said "link at the top of the page", and there were several links, so based on my question I thought that was what you meant.

Well, technically I'm a kid, 13-years old, but that doesn't mean I'm dumb.
I once built a robot that sorted colored blocks, and used a learning algorithm of my design to determine where the block belonged based on your input.
I didn't know TWP had a chat channel. I might check that out.
I'd just like to state again that I'm new to stuff like this, and am bound to make mistakes or miss things that more experienced designers think are obvious. So, sorry if it seems as if I'm missing obvious, or simple stuff.

Links on the top of the page:
News, Forums, Downloads, Portal 2 Mapping Wiki, (Which Msleeper linked to) Puzzlemaker Wiki
Nothing up there is the link you linked, unless, of course, you linked something from the P2MW.

Ooooh. I thought msleeper meant at the top of the page that was in his/her post.
