New update breaking Authoring tools
Posted Aug 17, 2012
As of the new update to portal 2 and the tools, i have been unable to open the tools. Portal 2 runs fine, but the authoring tools close as soon as they open. Am i the only one with this problem?

You're not the only one. Validating both Portal 2 and the Authoring tools should fix it.

I've noticed Hammer has gotten a bit more crashy since the update. Annoying.

I had to validate the tools once, and Portal 2 three times now...
I don't know what the fuck they're doing with their update, but it's really frustrating.

This sequence worked for me: update both things (tools and portal 2), verify tools, verify portal 2. Not sure if the sequence of verifies matters, but if you do it like this you shouldn't need to verify more than once.

I verified the tools yesterday, 1 corrupted file, tried it again today: 93 corrupted files... I didn't do anything in between...

Also verified both: First Portal 2 then Hammer after the update. Hammer had 104 corrupted files, Portal 5.

Hammer had 93 for me the second time I verified without opening it. WTF?

I had to do this same sequence as well (verify both the Authoring Tool and the Portal 2 game itself) to get everything working again.

Tools: 113 files failed to validate
Portal 2: 55 files failed to validate
I wonder how that happened. Anyway, verfifying solved the problem.

Had that same problem after the latest update, and also had to re-verify. Most annoying, you'd be forgiven for thinking they'd have the ability to deliver a patch without breaking things but apparently not.
