Portal 2 suddenly broke?

I was trying to debug my map when suddenly Portal 2 crashed. I've validated several times, both it and the authoring tools (at first it found 53 errors, then the next validate found 51, etc...to 0), but nothing changes. Sometimes it hangs on the screen with P-Body jumping, sometimes it gets farther then instantly crashes.

There doesn't seem to have been an update recently...any ideas?

This happened to me once. It was only about 20 files though. I think I just reinstalled and it worked. Have you tried that yet?

No, my internet connection is bad. I'll try that, though.

Does reinstalling screw up any custom maps/instances/materials/models/etc? Or is it like validating and it leaves new stuff alone?

I honestly don't know. I didn't have anything custom at the time. I would back it up just to be safe.

Sorry, I couldn't help but see this in my mind's eye. And then I couldn't resist to make a silly drawing.

Good luck with fixing the problem.

I don't think so, at least regarding P2AT which I had to reinstall some time ago: all my custom instances were intact... Anyway, backup your things just in cases.

Anyway, does that crash happen to you when you try to run a map or is it at startup? if it's loading a map, does it happen always with your map or others too?

At startup, right before the little dots appear at the bottom of the loading screen.

If you have already verified your game local files, then I can only think of a custom file you have introduced that somehow interfieres with the main files the game loads on startup. Custom scripts maybe? any modification in portal2.fgd (that somehow is still there surviving the verify)? No clue...

OMG, fixed. There was a sound in /sound/music/ that I had made that was causing a problem. I reinstalled after backing everything up, then transferred folders one by one until it stopped working. It's fixed now.

sigh

Any idea why this might have happened? The sound crashed Hammer, too. It opened fine with Audacity, Wavosaur, and Windows Media Player. The sample rate was correct, and it had loop points.

NOOOO! Now the authoring tools are "currently unavailable". WTF, Valve?

Whenever I get this, restarting Steam has fixed it.

Thanks, Mevious. That didn't work, but restarting my computer and then validating found 43 files it missed before, and then it suddenly became available.
