I am going to make an outdoor map SO I was wondering howto make terrain and a sky and an entrance that fits in.

Make the surrounding brushes for the sky and texture them with the skybox texture. In the map properties, choose a skybox name. Add an env fog controller, and for the ground, make it bumpy with the vertex tool. Texture the ground however you want. I suggest a grass material. Add clips so the player won't go too far and in the background, and add skybox models. I hope this helps.

@yishbarr: that's kind of a messy advice, if I may say.

  • Skybox: there are 2 different kinds, 2D and 3D. The easiest way is the 2D skybox (which is what yishbarr was referring to), though this one doesn't allow skybox models since it is applied in flat surfaces by texturing a brush's side with the texture toolsskybox, then opening your map's properties and selecting one of the stock skys (you can also use a custom one too, there are many in the internet, by simply dropping the files into your materials/skybox folder). The 3D skybox does allow 'skybox models' and a lot of stuff as yu can see in the wiki.

  • Terrain: you create out of displacements, and these are made by the Face Edit Sheet. You can select a variety of textures for displacement (or can make a custom one), search for 'blend' in your texture browser to find those that can be used here.

So its ok to give advice even if you have no idea what you're on about? Jeez.... In that case snapper, disregard the displacements. Terrain should be made by using the carve tool!

Maybe the buttons in the game should be connected by a cable instead of inputs and outputs.

Ignore all these people. You can make nice terrain by opening the Face Edit tool and clicking on the flat ground, then switching to the "Displacement" tab and clicking "Create." Once the displacement is created it won't seal the map from leaks, so you need to add another brush under it. Then you can start using the Paint Geometry tool to manipulate your terrain.

If you yourself are not going to be giving good advice, then simply don't give any. Giving out "newbie information" is a terrible idea, because more often than not you perpetuate half-truths and partial solutions.

It's great that you want to help. Just make sure you're helping the best way that you really can.

Then you shouldn't have posted in the first place. That's what I'm saying. Not providing any information at all is better than providing possibly bad information. Trust me, someone would have (and did) provide the correct solutions to the problem without you giving your "suggestion".

But that's the problem. You're new and you don't know how to handle Hammer perfectly. And that's okay. Nobody is going to hate you because you're not an instant-pro. What's not okay is that you give bad information assuming that it's the perfect solution to a problem. You might think that you know a problem's solution but you should keep in mind that there might be better solutions that you don't know since you're new.

Wouldn't you be confused, if you needed advice on something and a beginner gave you some that is completely unreliable and that would cause problems?
