[WIP]Aperture Secondary Labs - Room 1
It is the first in a series of 7 to 10 (don't know exactly yet) I am planning to do in order to learn hammer.
This one focuses on buttons and doors, with simple flings.
It is probably not really fun or challenging, but remember this is both my first map and room 1 in the series. The rooms will follow a progressive difficulty curve.
The series takes place in aperture science secondary labs. In this lab, GlaDos "daughter" Glados II begins her own experiments.
I am according lot of thought in creating new sarcastic lines for this junior sadistic AI.
Planned improvements (any advice for making those will be gladly appreciated) :
-Customize the "01" sign
-Import a custom overlay to make the "aperture laboratories" logo on the black wall white.
-Import custom sounds for GlaDos II speak.
- Slight visual improvements
- correct the tubes in the pit (I know they are wrong, but I was eager to get opinions before going further).
-Listen to your advices
Quick edit, just to let you know you should only include the .bsp, you included all the hammer files too (not sure if that was intentional)
Also I managed to make it so I didnt need to press all the buttons I just flinged across it all, whether thats an intention to mean advanced people get past it faster I dunno.
On the whole it was good
The "lab room" that you have, the wall on the left of it needs to be pulled a bit more over, it leaves a tiny gap that you can see into.
Edit: Found a big flaw...
You can jump onto the buttons and jump onto the next ledge, not needing to fling or press any of the buttons, maybe make the step up to next ledge a bit higher so you can get on button and jump up.
The intended solution is to use the pit to gain momentum for the flings
In fact I was pretty sure there was an advanced solution to bypass elements. An intuition, because I could not figure it out.
I would be very interested in knowing this solution.
Thanks for the reporting the gap mistake. I'll fix it.
The way I did it, because you cant shoot a portal into the pit, without making it sideways, which is a pain, I just hit the button and placed a portal on the floor thats above the pit, then I dropped out and fell into it. The other way is also the button way I described, the last button jump is hardest I've only done it once, but the first 2 I have done a few times
I think I'll leave this solution available in the final version. It can be good if I ever do challenge scripts for it
No video needed, I perfectly understood what you did.
EDIT : About the "button climbing", THAT have to be corrected. Thanks.
okay, looking forward to the other challenges.
I remember GePy decided to host the source files on his space and let people download them if they wished, but he stopped after no one bothered. I guess people just aren't all that interested.
And even if they are, they're always VMEX.
P.S. Congrats on your first map. Hope to see more.

Damn. in after Hober. Well this is a good concept but I'm afraid that there are some bugs to it... Such as getting stuck, and the aforementioned button climbing.
Do you mean stuck in the like area where the door opens for a set period of time? Just dont remove the portal and you can go back through

Getting stuck? How?
I thought the concrete walls were far enough from the doors to prevent bugs, is that not the case?
Or you mean firing portals from the hatch and then having ithe hatch close?
Seems to me it's not an issue : if you have a portal outside, you can fire again a portal in your back on the concrete.
And you necessarily have a portal outside, whatever you do. Unless there is enough concret to fire two portals at once in the hatch...
If that's the case, portal_bumpers should do it to prevent it.
EDIT : Yep, you do have room for two portals. So the problem is real. I'll use portal_bumpers so the portal gets redirected closer to the middle, which should prevent it.
In fact I like very much the idea of an "obvious but hard to do solution" with the pit, and a "less obvious but easier solution".
I didn't do it on purpose, but I think it gives the player that thinks of flinging from the hatches an interesting sense of freedom.
Also this is room 1, so it kinda fits to have an easy but open to several solutions problem.
I could prevent this by making all the floor metal in order for everyone to do the purposely annoying fling in the pit, but it is sure more fun to leave it as it is now.

Yeah I agree, like you said its room 1, there could be more than one way to complete is it can help new people out.
Hows the other rooms coming?
They're only ideas to help you, this is your project and it is up to you to decide what you're gonna do with it.
I often get told by my friends I got dry, sarcastic humor. The biggest problem is I ain't funny on purpose, most of my jokes I make without knowing it is funny. Hmm...
In any random test chamber:
"Mommy said I am not allowed to offer tests without a solution. I don't agree. See if you can get out of here."
After you defeated an android:
"Boo! You killed the android! You broke his heart!"
In a Weighted Companion Cube test chamber, if the test takes very long:
"I can speak and I'm going to stab you if you don't get moving."
In a chamber with toxic goo:
"If you want to do something funny, try touching that green goo on the ground."
In a chamber with a combine ball:
"You wanna play catch?"
When you get stuck:
"Ooh, now you've done it, now you're stuck and I gotta help you out."
"Right, getting stuck is NOT the way to survive in here!"
If you detatch camera's:
"Those cameras are vital testing apparatus. In layman's terms: Keep your dirty hands of them!"
"Detatch another and I'll detatch your head from your body."
When flinging:
"What was that again about flinging? It had to do something with momentum..."
"Oh, yeah, speedy thing goes in, speedy thing comes out."
With the rocket turret:
"Be carefull, he's asleep. And he doesn't like being awakened."
"Ooh, now you woke him! Now you made him angry!"
Overall that 'Little Evil Girl'-thingy. If anyone of you ever played Advance Wars 2 or DS, the way CO Lash talks.
A few examples I already wrote :
"According to mommy's data on androids, their main objective in life is to find love. I think it is just too cute, and I want to help you to find your love. This is why I introduce you to this aperture science high energy pellet".
"Oh, it looks like the high energy pellet dumped you for this aperture science high energy pellet receptor... Too bad, I was expecting you to make me a little brother with it. Now I'll have to play alone. You are so mean".
"Look at her, your beautiful princess, with her kissable grey surfaces, her flowing non existant hair, and her little hearts all over her. Hurry up and save her, Lancelot."
Much more to come, but I actually have to find a nice effect and a text to speech with a little girl's voice
A few more that came up to me:
General:
"Do you like cake? I like cake a lot! Mommy bakes them often!"
"Cake, cake, caahaake! Delicious, precious, adornable cake!"
When you fizzle an android:
"The androids like cake too. But that's no reason to bake them."
When going BTS (if you want to add such a place):
"Boo! Going where I can't see you! That's no fun at all!"
"If you want cake, well, you're not gonna find it here."
"Do you want to play hide-and-seek? If I find you, you're baked.
I'll just post any little idea I get here. You may do with them whatever you want.
