Portal Remake

I'm currently working on a Portal remake to the Portal 2 engine/design style. My goal is to keep design continuity between both games and give a fresh look to the original. I'm still not going to make any major public announcement before I'm pretty sure I can push this mod forward. I know this is not a very tough task, but is still challenging, even more when I think how I will design and make the BtS and final battle levels.

It's going to be a mod for both Portal 2 and Portal games, which means you'll have to own both games in order to play it. The main assets come from Portal 2, and a few from Portal (GLaDOS' lines, the vault, clean textured models etc).

I never used Hammer so extensively before, and as such I'm facing some problems, both in making the levels themselves and trying to not let my computer shut down. But the good thing is that I learn even more how to use the powerful tool and support more the community.

My current goal is to reach Test Chamber 10 and, then, open up a page on ModDB. If I can make it, I will possibly be able to finish the mod.

Any opinion/suggestion/criticism is very welcome. I really want to finish this mod, and I pratically spend all my day making them. Thank you for your time. :wink:

Looks nice, but Chamber 1 looks like the one from Portal 2 rather than the one from Portal (you have the buttons instead of a timer).

It's on purpose. The old testing track you visit at the beginning of Portal 2 is the same from the original game. As I said, I want to maintain the continuity between both games. These are my two main goals: continuity and remaking.

The testing track you go onto isn't necessarily the same one you played in portal 1, it could have just been a similar one.
I'm sure you're also aware of the many Portal 1 remakes already being done

Yes, that's a possibility, since they used to test a lot of test subjects. But I have some clues that make me think that's the same one ? for instance, the Ratman's hidden signs for Chell.

I've seen a couple of remakes, but it's a chance for me to test my skills. :smile:

I downloaded some maps of this project and, to be honest, its style don't please me very much. It's too Portal 1 for me, I want to blend the styles a little bit more. I think we'd have problems if we team up. :biggrin:

Oh, it's always nice to have some support. And, yes, I don't doubt I will need help in a thing here or there, so I hope I can always count on the community. But I think I'm doing a good job for now. :razz:

I'm really close to done already, and releasing very soon. There are also other people trying to do this, meaning this is like a semi-competition.

Hmm.
Just because someone has done it already doesn't necessarily mean that he has to stop working on his version. You wouldn't abandon your project because of Alive & Kicking, would you?

I'm really curious on how you made your own entity with vscripts.

I wish you luck on this project, hopefully it will not be an overwhelming mess.

Maybe some form of addoutput "classname new_class," then using that as an ent_fire target? A new class in name, but not form?

Um... Clagaris, why would you put a portal 2 map pack on greenlight? Doesn't that cost actual monies? Do you know of the workshop? Are you going to charge people for it to get your money back? Would you have to pay valve royalties for using their engine/assets/int property (twice)? Do you think you might get DMCA'd? Perfectly copying a 6 year old game is a little easy, If you are an "indie developer" shouldnt you be putting your creativity into a new game? or atleast a new map pack? Why are all your custom maps so dark? Why is the light you have actually used so harsh?

Also your avatar is freaking me out a little. Its like a strange guy eyeing me from across the bar.

  1. It's on Greenlight because I will be uploading a new self-made game soon. It's a free mod, meaning it won't be removed.

  2. The lighting has since been fixed.

  3. Now it's a turret shooting you, better?

@Iwork, its 95 percent on its way to top 100. I'd like to assume that's good.
