Lets talk about "adding" stuff to the game.

I would love to see some Portal action with a mixture of half-life 2 baddies in it... I am not a coder, just do some modelling and mapping.. so my question is, how hard would it be to import weapons to the portal engine?

I propose that anyone willing to discuss this topic, do it here.

Q-

P.S. Welcome me.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'adding weapons to the game'. But Portal is based on HL2 completely. If you use the cheatcode 'impulse 101' you'll get all HL2 weapons.

They look a bit glitchy though.

Didn't know that well what i was thinking is, I can envision a multiplayer mod with this portal technology where the gun itself had limited uses, and spawned very infrequently for death match, or for team/class based mod, having 1 class that uses the device for circumventing obstacles for the team...

Could/would a portal be available to be used by anyone in the game once created? Would it be based on your team? There are alot of questions that I am sure could be asked, however... all speculation aside, I am sure that a good coder could bend the variables of Aperture's science toy to fit into some form of SP/MP DM or Team/Class based mod.

There is already a "portal" multiplayer mod.

It's real glitchy and laggy.

Yeah, ExitE is neat but they seemed to have stopped caring about updating the mod. I think the last release was in 2006? Maybe when the portal code is released with the full SDK, they'll give it another go.

I think that would be out of the question since their version is the one containing bugs.

But who knows...

It is pretty common knowledge that Valve hired on grads from DigiPen who came up with the concept for Portal, called Narbacular Drop.

Talk about a worthwhile investment.

Yeah, it kind of makes me depressed to know that I was considering going to DigiPen, and they graduated a year after I would have.

I have a thought What if we could get the physics engine to recongnize certain textures that would cause the portal projectile being shot to ricochet instead of just disappearing.

Just a thought, I dunno anything about coding but if the "power" balls could bounce, why not the projectile?

There is a brush entity called func_portal_bumper, this might bounce portals but I haven't checked it out yet.

That won't be possible for some time until the full SDK update is made - which according to the Valve programmer mailing list, may be weeks and not days. I'll see if I can dig the email up and post it in the news.
