Making songs in Portal 2 style

Even though I've posted here mostly mapping related posts, one of my other hobbies is making music. Recently I started to do a bit of research on how some of the Portal 2 sounds from the soundtrack were made. I know that quite a few people have already discovered that Mike Morasky used some Massive presets (funny thing is that all of them start with letter A and Massive's soundbank is sorted alphabetically - someone's been pretty lazy when looking for the sounds ) as well as Chipsounds synth and even the discontinued NI Pro-53, but I was wondering if I can get the same sound out of Reason 7, which doesn't support VST instruments. This research has later become my first proper Portal 2 styled track (I've made a couple of them before, but the synth sounds weren't as close - they sounded much more like Harry101UK's take on Portal 2 style).

Have you tried to make a Portal 2 styled song? Feel free to post a link if you have, maybe we'll find out that there's a lot of composers here at TWP that can make some custom music for upcoming maps and mods

woah nice song (seriously I really liked it)

well most of the songs on portal 2 are either opera, eletronic-ish (like thed one you did) and there is also the underground music (god I hated the underground music, only the ones used specifically on the test chambers).

Now custom music for portal 2 is like either Harry or either your style, while you can use any music on a map or make a song like one of harry's, the only problem it needs to fit the theme.

For example, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XngX89p ... 1KrfFVRPfa this song would fit perfectly on a overgrown test chamber. But, harry made his own style, as such portal 2 (portal 2 had a lot of styles on their songs haha)

But, if you make a song you must first aim, like, I know your intention was to fit the glados to wheatley scene on portal 2, and you did very well it completely fit (lol even the art is good).

honestly, if you worked yourself on this song, theres pretty much a lot you can do further on! Keep at it!

off:

you're the creator of deep chambers? Oh Hello I really liked that mod

Damnnn that was good! Loved the chiptune stuff and the sync lead. I would reccomend taking out the kick drum, portal doesn't have those, and adding more bitcrushed rhythms into it. I really don't know reason, so I can't help you there, however, having komplte 9 ult, I have found many many many of portal 2's sounds. Everywhere from I saw a deer today, the underground electric piano, to the turret redemption line. Personally I like to create my own patches cuz I feel using presets are kind of cheating (unless its a basic saw, square, sine, etc).

Anyways, I've done some stuff of my own, not nescisarily in the fast paced style you did (because I've never ha, but as a bit of a changed style for my mod and pac0masterand's abyss.

You can check out some abyss stuff here, and maybe some more when I get around to uploading more.

You'll notice a significant addition of acoustic instruments. This is because the mod focuses on more of a human aperture, so I kept some of the "chiptunes" but added more "humanity" to it.

Also, a while ago, I did a <Holiday Name Here> map series. I threw together the soundtrack in about 1 hour.https://www.dropbox.com/sh/tsox741178yj ... 54Oqa?dl=0
Honestly, I really think the <Holiday Name Here> stuff is below mediocre.

That's all I could find that have been released. I have a bunch of really good stuff in progessprogess that u could post here when I'm back.

Also, bitcrushers are awesome.

I've actually noticed that some of the Portal 2 songs have kick drum, but it's mixed in at very low volume and it's more of a classic kick drum. The one I used is perhaps too loud and heavy - I'll keep that in mind. I agree with adding more bitcrushed and glitched rhythms (I should get a beat repeater).

I agree, I just thought it was surprising to see how many of the Portal 2 sounds are presets and people still think of P2's soundtrack as one of the best soundtracks. I used to be very strict about not using presets, but recently I've been trying to look at them for mostly educational purpose.

I really like your "Revival" track, good work on both the ensemble strings and string arpeggios!

That is amazing! The beginning sounds like "There she is", and I love how the track gets faster. I really feel like I'm running to a Escape Pod in the middle of fire or when Glados is trying to kill me.

That's because Harry's style relies on more digital sounding synthesis and drum beats, and it mostly isn't cinematic, its happy testing music. The example I always bring is comedy=tradgedy+time. (While it is a preset COUGH COUGH) It feels very robotic; it doesn't have an easily defined pitch and strange fluctuation, leading it to feel robotic.

I finally finished another song a few days ago, and now after TWP is back on I remembered this thread was still here. This time I tried to make a song that would fit into the game menu.

Very impressive. Your tracks sound nicely cinematic and go with the portal 2 soundtrack really well.
By the way are these VST plugins you're using free/cheap? (and compatible with FL studio?)

Thank you!

I use Reason 9, so some of the devices I used for this track were stock plug-ins. Other than that, I used Rob Papen's Predator synth and ProjectSAM's library for strings, arp and brass.

This is amazing! Where would it fit? A boss fight, perhaps?> Fluppy wrote:

Other than a main menu, this would fit really well in an overgrown chamber.

Ever so slightly off topic:You may notice that there is a significant change in Portal 1's and 2's soundtracks. What might Portal 1 songs sound like, remade in Portal 2's style? (If it could be done)
