Making this site the dominant Portal (Mapping) Community

Though I originally came here for the Portal mapping, I can't actually do it myself and am going to wait for the official SDK to do it. In the mean time I've been thinking about this website.

Considering a lot of people have bought Portal, this is probably not going to be the only community around. And though Msleeper has noted that the forum has gained a nice number of members in the first few days, this might fade over time while more websites pop up.

In the end, the first dedicated website to pop up on google when you type 'Portal Mapping community' is going to be the big winner. At this point this website has that position, let's keep it that way.

So I was wondering wether I, or other members of the forum, could help out to improve this website. Don't get me wrong, it looks good already. But I mean things like:

-The Wiki, There is a link on the main page, but it's not up yet. Let's get it up as soon as possible and fill it with info of course. That way people get to notice they can find general information about portal right here.

-Also, if you happen to be on any other forums, and someone asks for a portal community. Give them a link here.

-And the steam group: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/portalmapping
Everyone on the forum should become a member. The more members, the higher we are on the group list.

Once again, I do not wish to say that things should be different. Only making some suggestions to help

Your help is appreciated and will be taken onboard. Once msleeper gets himself online again, we will make progress.

Glad we're all on the same page here. I'd love for this to become the premeire Portal mapping community, and we can all do our part to make it that.

  • Make content often, post content often. The more maps we have for download (download page coming soon too!) the better. The more screenshots of custom content, the better.

  • Information, tutorals, etc. I am going to get the wiki online tonight or tomorrow, and the more that everyone can put up, the better. Tutorials are always awesome! Not just generic mapping tutorials, but entity setups for things like cube-button puzzles, fizzlers, energy ball shooters, and so on.

  • Publicity. I'm sure that most of the people here saw this site from a link at another site. So make a signature, put a link or something in it, and use it on other message boards! I am going to try my hardest to keep this site ad-free, and so that means the members need to be the advertisements.

Yeah, i came across this from another forum.

I'm awaiting the newer mapping tools before attempting anything, but I love the enthusiasm we're already seeing amongst the "hackers on steroids" in the group

But i loved the concept of portal, so there is alot we can do with it, in terms of mapping and crazy concept puzzles.

and the beauty of it, is its not about the graphics, or weapons, its just about the thinking, out side the square that is

Funny that you say that. I've been going around with an idea for a map pack for a while: 'Thinking outside the box'. Came up with it even before release.

For those not seeing it: It's smart cause it's an actual expression, and 'the box' can refer to the Orange Box -> the original game.

I hereby grant permission to anyone who wants to use it for a series of maps ^^

Well I don't know if I would say "rival", but it's good to see what other sites are out there. Thanks for finding them though, post any more sites you come across.

Maybe we should raid the other forums and spam links leading back here, in hopes of luring a few people over?[/joke]

See if anyone can find some Narbacular Drop mapping sites. I have heard it had a really cult following in terms of custom puzzles, maybe we can tap into that and bring them over here?

We should invite the members of those other forums to join us here, enticing them with our much larger and far more badass members.

yeah, bribe their leaders with promises of admin status to minimize competition.

edit**wiki, and file bin wiki or something to keep all the maps in once place

I'm not sure that would be appreciated. I think it would look a lot like advertisement to them. Maybe it's a better idea to keep it on friendly terms and contact the admins only for example.
