On-screen displays in blind playthrough videos
Posted Apr 01, 2012
Now that I have played through all the single player maps in the Released map category, I'm going to follow Djinndrache's example and record blind playthroughs, because the videos will be current enough to be of benefit to the mappers. If I can stay current with the new released maps, I'll be dipping my toes in WIP, too.
If you have seen my recent videos, you will notice that I have netgraph 1 displayed. My questions for mappers are:- Is netgraph 1 really helpful for mappers (e.g. detecting lag)?- Would cl_showfps be better?- If I use cl_showfps, can someone point me to a style sheet where I can alter the font size and color?- Are there any other on-screen displays that might be helpful (e.g. console output)?
I really don't care what casual viewers might think, they're not my audience for blind playthroughs. I'll try to remember to turn this stuff off when I'm recording a solution video.

Not sure if any fps display would be helpful, as fps usually is totally different while recording and while not recording. Also I'm usually playing with vsynced fps while recording, so it would be a boring static number, that's why I decided to not show anything like that.

Well Kennkong, I think it will depend on which tool you use for recording... my experience when recording with FRAPS is that FPS drop down a little (significantly many times), so anyway, the FPS count won't be so realistic if it gets affected by the recording. Unless I've got a worse machine than you, very probable thing indeed!

I don't think it would be useful; watching the video will also show lag itself there's no need for fps. Specially not if you're planning on recording with fraps. As said before; it's often at a set record rate and it will influence your fps anyways.
I recommend mapper to use this to actually test this themselves so they know about any issues before releasing it!
