That means I was right all along. Portal 1 and 2 ARE in a different universe than Half-Life. EAT IT. EAAAT IIIIT.||

||This actually makes it possible that they ARE in the same universe:

For the record, "Cave Prime" is not the cave we all know. THAT Cave comes from a universe where Greg exists and Caroline does not. (thus I have no idea who would have been put in the computer should Cave die.... Greg?) Therefore the universe that GLaDOS is in can be connected to the Combine universe (or one of them - there's infinite universes, as Sven said, so surely it's occured on at least one Earth) by that fact that she hints she knows about them at the end of Portal.

This leads to another question: the Combine Portal. that portal goes between universes. Does that mean the Combine are actually from another Earth?||

It's in the beta files.

But the file is listed as altcave. For all we know the Aperture from the promo videos and the actual game are alternate universes all together. The Multiverse really makes the story of Portal 2 a lot harder to put on the HL2 timeline, but I'm sure the one with GLaDOS; and the game we played is in the HL2 universe the most.

Valve pretty much announced "anything goes."

TBH, I don't think that valve are going to make the multiverse thing canon in the game, it would make the story too confusing for a game.

Confusing? Dude, Mario. The guy is a plumber, he kills King Bowser "not-a-dragon" Koopa more times than he's puffed on his joint (come on, he's got to be stoned to believe that mushrooms are talking to him - or, for that matter make you more powerful) and then lets Peach/Toadstool get kidnapped again. Yet people still trust him to not screw up next time. I wouldn't even mention the non-Japanese version of SM2 were it not for the fact that I just did.

I agree with Omega. Just because there are dumber or less justifiable plots out there doesn't make a good excuse to fail to properly explain your own.

Then go tell them and not me. I can't change it.

Actually, with the multiverse theory it's possible that on one of those Earth's the Aperture exists only as a fictional video game company as part of a popular vidoe game series :V

That's ridiculous.

I agree; I mean that would mean the Combine are video game characters too, and that's just absurd!

Well this is simultaneously a great idea and a lazy-as-fuck idea. On the bright side this opens maaaaany doors for new characters (ie if you make a new GLaDOS and name it something else it can be called Canon) and makes every single custom map canon (Hell you could say in one universe Blue Portals is Canon) but on the other it's a poor excuse of a plot and has a TON of loopholes. (some of the dialogue == wtf?)

Those of us who don't have dlc2 or whatever you want to call it yet (such as myself) will be getting it tomorrow.

That's one of the altcaves in dlc2. I don't know who owns the website.
