I tried skinning a portal model but when I tried to open it in photoshop it wouldn't let me, I have the plug in and everything, I've made loads of custom textures before,
what am I doing wrong?

Umm... I am not sure but I think you can't.
You can always replace the second skin of turret that isn't used in game.

Interesting what you all have whipped up... need, more to come so we have a larger choice on who likes what the most

I wondered that too, i made a thread in the Discussion Thread and Msleeper sent me a link which was meant to show how to do it... but it only showed how to edit the .vtf file... which is what we are doing >_<

Would it be possible to make a walkable turret? hehe.

heh, that would be possible, just need to replace another NPC's model with the portals turret and add in animation of it walking... that would be quite cool, add more tension into the game knowing that a turret can follow you around the map.

Make it like a tank, how it has the wheels and make it so the turret part can go around in circles and spot you out. And maybe even equip a rocket launcher on it on the side of it.

Why not just make it so ti walks instead of riding around on wheels?

Did someone signal me? What's the emergency?...Oh hi.

I used this tutorial to teach me everything I know.

The .vtf file is just the texture, so if you change the original, you change all turrets, perhaps in other mods and even the official game.

I can't see anywhere in the .vmt file that states how many texture channels it has, but in my case, where the model has 2 texture channels, the second one's .vtf and .vmt are named the same except they have "_skin001" on the end. perhaps if you saved your new .vtf with that on the end, and copied the .vmt file, edited it to look for the new .vtf, and renamed it similarly, then hammer might accept it automatically?

Just a blind theory but I'll be interested if it works .*

The above tutorial copies the entire model so that it's seperate from the original. This is fine for what I was doing because I'm just making a prop_physics entity, but I don't know how it will affect an npc_portal_turret entity, because you can't change their world model.

Also, mine still won't show up in portal (It's there, I can pick it up and emancipate it and everything, but it's just invisible)

I'm still a noob so don't take my word as gospel.

*Just tried it with mine. Doesn't seem to work

I tried it as well before i started this thread and it didn't work.

Mapster, Wroth - The VTF is just the skin, not what tells the model how to use it's various skins. You need to create an additional skin by editing the VTF, and then decompile the model and add in a new line for the new skin, then recompile it and copy it to your /models/ directory. Trust me, that tutorial has everything you need. I'll make an example when I get back to my home computer, I need to add some new skins to the boxes aswell.
