I'm gonna side with the play-by-ear thing. Rules aren't really needed. If someone does something that's out of line, then it can be dealt with. There's no need for rules that cause more problems than they solve.

So I may keep my watermelons? :v

Well really we only need one "stupidity" thread. Maybe combine Ducks and Melons? Duckermelons.

Yeah, just having one megathread of stupidity sounds good for me. If there are worthwhile off-topic threads that deserve their own thread (i.e., it is a topic of serious discussion), I'm sure they can be created as the thread arises. Since none of us have actually taken the time to carve out the watermelons in the pictures, I can comfortably say that we aren't all watermelon-carving enthusiasts.

So, all of your duck images were taken by you? :v

I'll throw my hands in the air, my watermelon thread was a not-so-subtle way to point fun at the duck thread. And everyone hated it. I saw that thread and thought "the fuck?". Because the concept of it was insane.

I guess people around here love ducks more than watermelon.

I am so tempted to turn that into a stereotyping joke about gamers, you can not believe. :v

The Founder's Duck is duck-themed, but its a general-purpose off-topic thread; it is LUTPHW, but reincarnated in a slightly different form. You can put watermelon and spiderbro pictures in there too.

I prefer to think of Founder's Duck as the more intelligent off-off-topic discussion, and Duckermelon as the less intelligent off-off-topic discussion

In regards to the rules, I do want to lay some basic, obvious rules (like no pornography and such), but beyond that I trust everyone to use their own discretion.

I'm giving this post all the rep I can.

And now to the uncomfortable part, that you must have seen coming
@Kizzy
It's not bad to help the community grow, but I mean... How are admin suggestions different from posters regarding posting guidelines? In my opinion, not much. Regarding technical background of the forums and what not, then it may be worthy saying "But hey, I've been admin and there's cool plugin to do this and that, we've been using it..."
You said none of that. Instead, it appears like if you have said "I've been admin, we could have watermelon threads, let me have one too"
Not-so-subtle hint about the duck thread? Come on. It was actually the most subtle hint in the world. If you had problems, you should have, gee, I dunno, said so? Like I did numerous times in numerous places (mAI chat, the watermelon topic, Suggestions & Feedback forum and discussed it with admins too)

Now you might think I'm being just -general asshole- who is not capable of either ignoring such topics or accepting the fun factor of it and jumping on the wagon of fun. I would love to say, that's not the case. I too, would love to improve this community, and since I believe we all are mature enough to have meaningful conversations that are actually interesting reads and thus, we don't need crappy "post watermelon" substitutes.

You are really cool guy, Kizzy, but sometimes I hate how light-heartedly you take things and if you create a poll, that has Yes or No options, you just have to make it have 6 options including Cucumber and Norway. So much fun, indeed.
Grow up, ya lil' admin.

also, I understand many are seeing my admin mentions as ego here... I am able to moderate, and have much experience in the field. indisputable fact...I'm just lending my input as an established admin... I think it only fair to state I have experience in that field, so these rules are crafted with them in mind...still, regardless, I will try to keep mentions to a minimum. I had only meant to help, but if it is causing annoyance, I shall stop.

Sure seems like ego.

cutting down the quote/answers because off topic.
the opinion is different, as they show the particular methods or rules have been carried out, with success, elsewhere.
I started the watermelon thread as a message that the duck thread was silly. I find it perplexing no-one sees how this was not a form of statement against that duck thread. as for complaining, I'm not a complainer. plus as it's admin approved, I doubt I'd be listened to

not quite. I admit I did play on that earlier, but only in jest. however, throughout that thread, you broke the rules, in my eyes. purposefully trying to derail a thread should not be allowed. and the admins here caved, in my eyes, and made the thread about the original topic AND the derailing subject. unacceptable, even for a thread meant as pointing out the absurdity of a duck thread.

I am a jokey joker. my personality is as such, and I refuse to change it. better to be humourful, than to be a suit. it was my personality on mAL, on Steam, on IRC and, yes, even the wiki that will not be named. it is just me.

I am the funny person in the room everyone wants to hate, but cannot bring themselves to do so.

Let's not let this get personal. That never goes well...

The duck thread is the "off topic megathread," the LUTPHW of this forum, the "Subject name changes" (to borrow from other people << >>). It's to keep the board tidy.

Thus I can understand the opposition to having what amounts to a second one, and since it seems to continue regardless of any defense I make against it, I will admit that I'm probably in the minority here. The topic will be locked, and any similar that have the same degree of opposition. I understand certain parties won't like this, but as the poll indicates, said parties are in the minority.

I hope we don't keep having these sorts of arguments in the future as they simply are a bad influence on the health of the board.

Thanks.

well now we won't know if what we post will be locked or not. thus, less posts to Off Topic :v

we need a ruleset. pretty much plain and simple. if we don't, we'll not know what is or isn't allowed. shouldn't even take that long. just a sticky of a thread you make, with four or five lines of rules

The thing is all rules will be read differently by different perspectives, creating yet more arguments.

How about this: if your thread is locked, you may PM an admin (obviously one other than the one who locked it, if it was locked by an admin) with an appeal for why you think your thread should not have been locked.

Thoughts?

The only issue there is we may succumb to, what I like to call, "The Nickworks Effect". :v
