Anyway, later I got curious to find out just how large I should have made the drop. I did some tests, and near as I can figure, the distance to achieve maximum velocity, when dropping gently off a ledge, is around 1216 units. (I used a grid size of 16 when testing).
I tested by creating a couple ledges I could only just barely reach by flinging, one coming out horizontally, and one coming out at a 45 degree angle. It got kind of confusing as I tested further, as I ended up with some jumps I was able to make 10% or 25% of the time, depending on whether I entered the floor portal towards the top or middle of it. I'm not very skilled so I couldn't do this consistently.
Just wondering if anyone else has tested this? Someone gave me the figure of 768 units but my results are quite different.
To sum up:
- if I drop 1216 units, I can make both jumps at least 80% of the time
- if I drop 1200 units, I can make one not at all and the other about 10% of the time
Let me know if I'm making any major mistakes in my thinking or approach to testing...
