My entry to the October Contest! Theme-Aperture Science Three areas, 3 maps! Can you beat them? Will you get cake at the end? I am very pleased with the results! So enjoy! Note, I didn't get the BMZ to work properly, but if you simply unrar and merge the map folders correctly, on your bonus map you should see a map/motanum folder, there are my 3 map entries! ^^ I welcome everyone to play them and to tell me what you think! uh? You installed correctly? Emm, try launching it with console commands.
I cnat believe that from all the times the map was tested (Not only me) Now I am getting this silly messages.
Try "map mota_level2" or "map mota_level3" or "map mota_level4"
I am going to delete my maps and install using the .rar
Also, if anyone can confirm his bug, or if he can play it.
EDIT I just opened portal, tryied to launch it using bonus maps, itworked. I went ahead and deleted my files and simply merged the map folders from the .rar and my /portal/portal/maps folder, and it worked.
Have you installed correctly? Please, anyone else confirm if they can play or not! I am getting nervous :S
For me, everything worked as it should. Just got over the first map. Nice work, however, I wouldn't qualify the first energy ball puzzle as "easy" (took like 20 tries to get the not-so-long-living ball to its destination).
At the beginning of the second map, the chamber sign disappeared (maybe it's an error on my side, however) - see the screenshot. Also, in the console it saysFailed to load sound "mota_level_g\portalsong1.mp3", file probably missing from disk/repository<br />*** Tried to load a non-VTF file as a VTF file!<br />Error reading texture header "materials/mota_level2/sign_1_unlit.vtf"<br />
and so on.
The second map was "the" easy one (at least for me). At the beginning of the third map, the chamber sign was the well-known black-pink checkerboard texture and then it got fixed itself.
The lighting in the second half of the third map looked a liitle bland. Seemed like you didn't have the time for final touches...
The chairs in the observation room weren't prop_physics.
I admit I had to cheat to get the cube out of the forcefield, so no cake for me today I guess...
However, that was the only puzzle I didn't find a solution to, and I had a lot of fun playing, so thank you very much for these great maps
Alright, yeah, pakrat sometimes messes up with some files -.- Works fine when nothing is paked :p
Emm, yeah, I dont think it was that hard the first one, is just, well, maybe you overlook something. People I played with where able to caught on with it!
Thanks for the feedback.
Whysopro?, another person also was able to play the map ( Besides Mek), So install it properly
I will try the console command one second.
Besides it's self explainatory to install a map...it's just copy and paste. You even had the folder named "maps" so I dunno Ill try the console.
If not, try downloading again, and then ensure the files are where they are suppsoed to be.
Anyone else played the map? Some constructive criticism is always welcome ^^
Please use spoiler tags so you do not spoil my endings ^^
I enjoyed this map very much so. The lighting was well enough where I didn't get disoriented. The pacing of the puzzles were spread nicely and the difficulty was a bit hard but not in a frustrating way. The extra voicing was unnessary and didn't fit when glados spoke, like when you knock a camera down.
Very nice and lengthy. All the levels were challenging and had nice puzzles. Excellent job mapping.
Just for the hell of it, here's my first pass through the final map in your set."part 1"

The maps were fun, but some of the puzzles were bland. For example, finding my way through that maze of tiny rooms to get the cube was just boring. I got totally disoriented, but it didn't matter because randomly trying things worked out. No one is going to get a sense of accomplishment from that.
On the other hand, there were parts where I got stuck and acted like an idiot, and I only realized I was an idiot after figuring out the right solution. A few of the puzzles made me stop, think, and try something different than my initial ideas. I enjoy those types of puzzles.
Thanks for the videos! Gonna watch them soon.
Emmm, I dunno if I am supposed to say this, but the maze is supposed to look harder than what it actually is. I actually design it so it is more linear than what it looks like ^^
I would appreciate for people to NOT watch the videos until after you have completed the maps.
Thanks, and good look on your map Mevious! I still have to finish it, it is quite hard.
It was a pretty ok map. Not horribly, but not great either. The puzzles weren't exactly "fun," but were solvable with relatively little problems. I think some more work on polishing could be used, just to try to get it a little closer to the valve standard.
the ending
it was rather expected and not very well delivered (tts may sound robotic but it sounds really bad when used as glados), and the final room didn't seem very polished
I thought this map was pretty decent. It was fun to play and the puzzles were good. The only section I did not care for all that much was the section with the small rooms linked together in the 3D maze. That was the weakest part of the map. I have played a couple of other maps that have used pipes to links rooms together and so far I have not seen it done too well. It is easy for players to get confused and lost, which results in frustration. In Portal, a player shouldn't ever get to a point of confusion that they no sense of where they are or where they should go.
I like map designs that look harder than they are. I thought the chambers in MotanumsTest did a pretty decent job of looking intimidating, but they all had solutions were pretty straight forward when I took the time to study the puzzle. Even the linked rooms wasn't too bad after I figured out that basically no matter what the puzzle was designed so that the player would find the cube even by randomly picking any direction. It was my least favorite, because there really wasn't a puzzle for me to solve, but I can see how it could have been much worse if a player was forced to logically try to find a specific path to the cube like in a maze that has a dozen of dead ends. If that had been the case I would have quit before I finished.
I'll play it again and if more comments come to mind I will post them.
I enjoyed this map, but one thing that kept bugging me was the fact that some of these puzzles where the same thing again and again and again, such as that fling where you go down from the ceiling, shoot a portal while falling and so on. You know what I mean. That turned a chore after the 2nd time, because you already knew what needed to be done.
The flinging was used many times, because I love flinging. :p And it was not particularly difficult.
This is my first run through the map (it is a slightly earlier version since I tested it) I would have given this a 5/5 but I didn't want to seem, well bias.
In 1080p too

Just rate it with a rate is best to describe the map

Yes, however it is boring.
"Oh, here, do that fling you did in the past 3 chambers. Again."
But like I said, the rest was great.
It was a very enjoyable map. At some point it seemed that you run out of option to properly "start" a chamber (I'm talking about two chambers where you have to do the big jump at the beginning), but then the "cheating" part made everything better. The last three cube test was very satisfying, though I am almost certain I could get stuck with two cubes while trying top reach for the third one. Oh, and the reference to the movie "Cube" was a big plus for me. The way of navigating throughout it was sort of a innovation for me, and it made me feel genuinely trapped! The ending was interesting one, it felt almost like an unofficial ending to portal.
Now I'm going to play the "Main four" map. I'm pretty sure this is gonna be as good as this on-
