Description

My firts attempt at Portal 2 mapping, its a 1 level Portal 2 map. Hopefully i have made a challenging map which you are not going to find to easy. It has speed and bounce gel, faithplate , light bridge and other elements. Hope you enjoy, and will wait nervously for your review, thanks.

Bold project for a first map, can't help but like the approach: we ain't here for preliminaries, so here's a big puzzlebox of horrors right off the bat and so much for acclimatizing. This does bring along some glaring flaws (all fixable), but the big effort has to be commended.

Think of a complex, multilayered map around the parts of Sp_reconstruct : as to say recursive single chamber in detailed, animated Broken style (liked the thing with the walkway). Only this one has bugged lightning (some areas look pitch black, i.e. floor button room; while others change depending on distance, i.e. funnel lever wall) and the intended solution snaps halfway through, just as you were enjoying the much varied cerebral experience.

The breaking point seemed to be noticing the water-level white panel in the back (bug: when you enter it, water hurts you): it will most likely happen in the second half, where it can be used to skip much if not everything else remaining. Same for walking over the closed panels on the far away wall: actually, that suited the need for going back after being stranded there - how about a legit alternative?

Interesting map. Very frustrating, but fun to play at the same time. As far as aesthetics, some of the textures seemed a little out of place, such as the concrete walls in the observation room with the lever. I give this map a 3/5.

Map crashes Portal on a mac. Portal 2 crashes just aver valve screen. Same problem as with the "proposal" map.

Thanks xdiesp for taking the trouble to record a demo then upload it . I will have a look at the lighting and try to brighten the map up a little. Did you notice that when you put the cube on the floor button in the water, the water started to rise, i have the trigger hurt parented to the water maybe thats why the water hurt you. I think i will need to block off that floor button untill when it is supposed to be pressed.

I saw it, but didn't want to spoil that great scene! The first time I noticed the water bug was at the water-level panel actually, but squint at the very last portaling in the video and you'll see it happening elsewhere. Must be a common occurrence, Psicodelia has it too. Same for the darkening wall, this map had it happening at the end of the first corridor.

If you want, you can add "xdiesp" to steam so I can help insulating the solution from exploits: only thing, I'm not 100% sure of the intended way.

Kind of frustrating map. I kept getting caught in the back part, got there two ways. Either way closed off the return and got stuck? I see xdiesp wthru but seems to bypass a lot of your map. I'll leave a rating in case you work on the map a bit more. Thanks for mapping.

I made it through all the steps after many hours of trying to figure out how.I had to send a bomb into the fizzler from the far side with the funnel.Had to be that way as a second fizzler wall comes up after contact is made with the first fizzler and I needed a portal over there.Once that is done the lazers are off and its a bunch of hard jumping through the portal to take the cube over.Make your way back the same way.Gotta be an easier way

Thanks xdiesp, i will do. I have sorted all the problems with light. One of the textures i used does not like light, i changed this texture and it solved the problem. Will make a demo of the way it is suppoed to playout.

Looks like the gels and the fan are strictly decorative. And please make the exit more friendly.

Your vid is the same as xdiesp's.its not the proper way to do it.You skipped 3/4 of it.The OP needs to fix it so it cant be done that way

Xdiesp has sent me a pm on ways to improve my map. I have fixed the exploit that is in the video and with Xdiesps help, will get the map up to a better standard.

Is that right, what 3/4 are you talking about? Why don't you make a video.

Sure you can walk it a little longer, but I just tried again and I still don't see how to use the fan. And again, it sucks being stuck by the broken stairs right before the exit. Unless it's part of the gameplay to skillfully bypass that railing.

The following is the 100% intended way of solving the map: as you can see, much of the good stuff can be skipped. The next update should fix the exploits and feature these acrobatics.

Sure you can do it your way at this time. But if you happened to look at the 1234 numbers around the chamber its easy to see you skipped it.Whats the problem? And the fan does nothing in first version for me unless you try the ramp but there is nothing to land on anyway so it was useless.

Nice xdiesp.Must be a newer version?Seems different than the one I used. The one I used had no platform coming up till after button was pressed and that was after getting the cube all the way to the other side and set on pad.I also just used the angled platform with funnel to drop the bomb on the glass and to get into that room.It only turned off the fan for me.Didnt raise a walkway.

In the version that's uploaded here now, the platforms on the other side pop up when you press the gel button.

Yes, it would be a good idea to deploy the fan somehow. As for the numbers 1234 around, it's dark enough in the chamber not to even notice them. Besides, those numbers give little tip. The simple solution comes naturally, so to prevent it some portal surfaces should definitely be taken away.

Your map had the potential to be a lot of fun, but so many little things spoiled the experience.

The darkness at the back of the room and the low angle of incidence in the line of sight prevented me from seeing the panels flipping up and down. For the same reason, it took me quite some time to realize that there was a button switch back there, too.

Not being able to see these elements led me directly to the shortcut others have shown.

All the gel slathered around made it hard to stay on the platforms. I know that most people play with a keyboard and mouse, so they can run in a perfectly straight line every time. I play with a PS3 controller, and weaving slightly while on propulsion gel will throw me in the water every time. How about some railings or a backstop?

Although I did solve the puzzle once using the faith plate, I didn't need it because you can walk to the button on the lightbridge.

Since the fan isn't running when the map starts (I never saw it running, anyway) you can solve the puzzle without the funnel or the bombs. I presume that you meant to have the fan blow you off course during a fling, requiring the player to disable it.

I think if most of these problems weren't in the map, I would have quite enjoyed it. If you patch it up, it might be one of those maps I play several times just for the fun of it. Unfortunately, it had too many problem for me, so I gave it a 3/5.

I am working on patching the map to get it to a better standard. I know there are a lot of flaws in the map but i am getting help from Xdiesp who has been a great help in pointing out where i have been going wrong. Everything that has been mentioned is in the process of being fixed and once Xdiesp has tested the map and gives it the thumbs up, i will release it.

I'm playing custom maps and record my first time of playing them. So the run is not perfect and may not use only intended ways, but maybe it can let you see how other people may understand the map or you could just enjoy someone playing this map for entertainment.
Anyways, here is the recording:

How in the world could a first timer create this map ??
I tried my hand at mapping but found it was extremely tedious and gave up.
But it does let me really appreciate the time and effort that goes into these.
A first timer built this extremely complex thing with tons of twists and turns and "haha . . gotcha" moments. My hat is off to you Sir.

It was a helluva ride, I'll tell ya that.
Really, I don't care about textures, seams, or glitches so long as they do not interfere with the intended solution's gameplay.
This was challenging and fun. And long.

BTW - I never used the faithplate because I was able to reach the square cube button via the light bridge coming from the far side catwalk.
