Description
My first actual finished map. It's not too difficult, and I was pressured for time, so I hope you like it. Feedback would be greatly valued as I'd like to make my next map even better. Enjoy! Credit: JamesK (original testing) - andyb - Senf - UsCobra11 - Shakky (epic map break!) - KennKong (great blind video) - sicklebrick (another insightful video!!) - John11 (least portals run) - BEARD! (for the constructive post, thank you!) - Djinndrache (for the video ) Changelog: -V1.26: removed alternate last solution -V2: took out some more solutions! Added fizzlers. -V2.1: removed some discrete but possibly alternate solutions, improved some texturing and (hopefully!) reduced lag during play. Spiced up the BTS area a little -V2.2: accidently created a flaw in V2.1 in test 4, fixed now. Removed and replaced vertex textures. Fixed a minor flaw just before Test 3. -V2.3: added a small easter egg. Aligned and pimped up all fizzlers. Tidied up map.

uhhh ok finished the fling/got cube and opened wall.. followed that to find a room with one dot, and 2dot by a dropper... no buttons or puzzle in this room? no doors open ...Does this belong in WIP?
I made a vid of my blind run but had to end it at the same spot as Szieve.Nothing to do.I'll post it once its done uploading
When I came there, instructions appeared for me: Place a blue portal here, place an orange portal there. This way I was able to get a cube out of the dropper, but still it's weird - no puzzle involved, just the Game telling you what to do...
Anyway, I kind of ragequit in the following first old-Aperture area, where I'm obviously supposed to place two cubes behind a fizzler. Am I supposed to place red gel, fling up, place blue gel, bounce up there quickly enough to get one cube at a time behind the fizzler? Because that would be pretty tedious.
Yeah...that was just me testing out hudhints.
I'm not much of a map making person, so apologies for the tediousness.
There was actually another method but I took that out.
A good first map.
Nevertheless it still needs a little work. The Turret-room seems to be shaking. o_o My redirection-cube did not want to stand still, so the exitdoor opened and closed from time to time. Furthermore I think you can get stucked behind a wall in the first room, although it didn't happen to me.
The instructions didn't appear at my screen, but I just tried placing portals and found the solution rather quick (at the mentioned cubedropper).
@zivi7: Maybe I played an earlier version of the map, but that puzzle was not that hard at all. Maybe the creator took the easy solution out. Is the button to deactivate the fizzler still there? Because then it should be rather easy.

Indeed, I forgot to mention that problem. If you jump through the fizzler and lose your portals you can get behind the opened wall and get stuck.

I only found a timed button on the ceiling so far. I'll try to solve it again later.

Thanks for that.I'll fix it.
Oh, lol, it actually is pretty easy. You just have to get the correct order when spraying the gels. Forget my previous nagging.
very nice.
in same room i'have not idea what do when i do some action... same platform moves without direct idea... i stay many time last room... i try to run fast end jump... and at the end... only jump... why white gel... that we cant'use?...
Pretty good map... on the part where you fall down and there is a button under the debris, i was able to bunnyhop across the small gap, skipping that little test. Not sure if this affects anything. Good map though

Thank you. The last room has a definite solution. I'll leave it to you
That's not a gel you're talking about, it's water.

Thanks! That's after test 2, right? That's fine- it's supposed to be a destroyed test chamber- there's nothing for you to solve there.
Great map. I decided to record a blind run for you but it took me about 17 minutes and I don't feel like rendering it all. I still decided to render my solution for the last chamber as I think it wasn't the intended one.

I didn't particularly get the world portal cube thing and why you added that because it felt really pointless. Also I would have liked it to be more difficult. Overall great job and I wish to see more from you later!

Wow! I feel so dumb now.
I'm going to go ahead and upload a new fixed version. Thank you very much for that.
I recorded my blind playthrough for you. The total playtime was 1:08:46, but I edited it down to 44 minutes to make it barely watchable.
In the first room, I don't understand why you can't shoot the portal surface in the well where the cube falls from the lightbridge above it. That seems to be an unnecessary blockage.
I didn't see the instructions for the 1-dot, 2-dot cube, but I managed to figure it out in under 3 minutes. I think I just got lucky figuring out the world portal thing there, and I probably missed an easier way to do things. I can see some players getting badly frustrated in there. You might want to reconsider that whole concept, but I understand if you want to keep the one novel idea in your whole map.
I didn't need the faithplate in the turret room, and I very nearly got stuck when I tried it. If I had lasered those turrets in the center of the room before I faithplated into that, I would not have been able to jump out. EDIT: Also, I never used the lasercube for anything.
The bounce to the exit of the blue/orange gel room took me a long time to figure out, mainly because there were so many fling possibilities to try. When combined with my ineptitude with blue gel, it gave me fits. I tried to leave in at least one variation of everything I tried, so you could have some chuckles at my expense.
I didn't see any glaring visual defects, and except for the faithplates, I didn't see any needless death traps. I think it's a little dark everywhere, but especially in the turret room. The puzzles weren't very difficult, but used enough elements and were spread out enough to make them interesting to figure out. Except for the laser room, I don't think I did anything too far from the intended solution, but you'll have to tell me if I exploited your map in some way. I enjoyed playing it, and I give it 4/5.

Overall I personally think some tests were confusing. They had too many elements and small rooms. I didn't notice a lot of elements, therefore got stuck in solving. The light bridge during the second test needs to be a bit more obvious in my opinion, I didn't see it for a long time. Or maybe I'm just blind.
Awesome first map; I was totally just expecting the first room, but there was a nice mixture of styles and puzzles. Nothing too difficult but it was deffinitely fun to play.
There were one or two issues, like skippable parts, no HUD hints, missing fizzlers and I was getting a pretty terrible framerate (hence deleting the video screens) but nothing major - it's playable anyway! Thanks
This is more or less the solution I went with. My turret buddy wanted a wee shower

I love your videos Shakky, I've had to look up your backing tracks 2-3 times to gab a copy
Pretty awesome! Took me quite a while, and took some time to finish, other then the older-aperture styled level, I figured out what to do as I went on, but, actually doing it was the biggest challenge. Also in the second room with the cube dropper, when I looked down into where the cube would land, I couldn't shoot a portal there unless I WAS there, not much of a change though, and it didn't bother me, but just saying. Anyway, great job! Couldn't believe this was your first! Keep going!
I got a PM telling me what to do in the one spot so I cancelled my vid upload so I could continue. Its a rather large map actually and has taken 4 hours to render so far with another 2 to go.All for ~25minutes of game play.Think I may change codecs.Anyway its a pretty good puzzle except for the end.If were supposed to jump the fence I dont like that but in my vid I didnt get that far as I ran out of room on the hard drive trying to jump over
andyb wrote:

It's possible to jump into the cube pit and out under the ceiling button then just jump round too.. but i couldn't figure out the intended solution either
Yea I tried lots of stuff but none of it felt right if you get my drift.Clumbsy way to do stuff isnt normal if that was the intended way
@sicklebrick, @andyb:
The intended solution for the last test: (assuming you already got the cubes in place)
To jump the last fence, cover the track with as much blue gel as possible. Then, bounce up past the fizzler by the buttons and go up to the second button (up the stairs). Then jump on the cube and onto that green block. Jump over the fence and bounce off the blue gel. Since you've jumped from a high height, you'll end up jumping straight over that fence.
@sicklebrick, @cda2369:
Cheers for playing and the kind words!
I just downloaded V2. A real problem with this map is that it has a very poor framerate which makes me feel sick. Timing and precise placements of portals are really frustrating because of that.
I don't have this stutter in other maps I play (unless there is a crap load of objects in the 3D space).
Great map, some uncommon solutions to the puzzles. The obvious way just didn't work, so one was left with trying something new - outstanding!!
Getting the cube in the back room of chamber 2/3? with the checked textures was not clear, no guidance came up or clue in my version...?
The final jump to the exit, brilliant...!
Thanks for creating.
I actually enjoyed this once I knew what to do.Map needs to be optimized thou.Very lagy.Good job just polish it up fixing what has been mention in all the posts
So after 8+ hours of rendering I uploaded it to youtube and that took 222 minutes only to be told it was to long and removed. So I went and got a sim card and had my account upgraded.I also used a new codec as previously stated and I can say I will never use it again. The vid is awful lol
Anyway I just started uploading again a little while ago and it will be almost 3 hours (170 min) from now till its up

Here's a least portals run of v1.26. I'd have to use 3 more portals due to the added fizzlers in v2, but I'd save 2 portals from the change to the world portal room.

Holy crap, John11, you really broke this map. Mapmakers take note: put fizzlers between your chambers. And I really like those cube tosses, especially in chamber 3: one cube lands on top of the other! If I could do that, my life would be complete.
Seriously? shooting portals on a wall and floor to drop a cube? otherwise easy..
Was there a point to the button in the room between the aforementioned and the turret room? I skipped altogether ...
Turret room .. Cake..easy
Final room.. Seriously? Dropper drops 1 cube the first time... after noclipping around to see if I could have possibly missed something, I tried the button again... 2 cubes... Mechanics of getting cubes to buttons and getting out were easy...
3.75/5

Yeah, those cubes landing on top of each other was awesome!
I wish I could say that was intentional.
A nice collection of chambers, easy to medium difficulty I'd say. I liked how the elevator videos were built into the wall. I've listed some nitpicks below, but I enjoyed the map overall - so thanks for mapping.
First Room: The construction was a little bland, using the same white texture for the whole room. Angled panels might have looked neater than having angled brushwork. The timers could have had a ticktock sound and it wasn't 100% clear how long the fizzler button worked for.
Second Room: The map was a little laggy here, but not unbearably so. Solved the puzzle ok, but some of the textures were a little off. I wasn't sure why we there needed to be worldportals.
BTS Area: I spotted a few mis-aligned textures, and noticed the shadows on the foliage were a bit blocky - a full VRAD compile might help there. The button didn't do anything and it confused me for a bit. Nonetheless, this area was a nice break from puzzling.
Third Room: As I fell into the slime I could see a trigger texture. It was a bit fiddly to grab both of the cubes but I managed okay. I didn't notice any other problems.
Fourth Room: Nice puzzle - I enjoyed bouncing to the elevator! I don't think the orange gel was needed at all though, because you can always just jump into the pit and fling yourself.
This is a quite enjoyable map. Worth the play!

@BEARD! Thanks for testing and the feedback
I have to admit, I wasn't into texturing at all until Chamber 3. Then I realised texturing is everything! Also, I actually planned three of those four chambers. You guessed right, Test 2 was the one I made up as I went along. And the worldportals didn't need to be there- that was a test for me, if nothing else. If you noclip, you would see that Test 1 and 2 are actually completely apart and are connected by worldportals. The original name for the map was "Impossibox", and there was only going to be two tests. I guess I got carried away.
@Djinndrache Cheers for the video, much appreciated. I liked how you solved Test 3
