INFO_PLACEMENT_HELPERS PLEASE!!!!!!!

My GOD!!! Dude! you should have used some info_placement_helpers! Sincerely mate, I swore at you a thousand times! Once I got the first key part solved in my head, it took me like 1 hour to finally make it, and all because the lack of placement helpers...

I have completed it and recorded my semi-blind run. It's semi because I've tried MAAAAANNY different approaches until I found the unique solution. And that is the important here: unique solution..

Greykarel, my most sincere congratulations! I'm completely excited after solving this. Absolutely my NUMBER 1 PUZZLE SO FAR... you even defeat my FAVOURITE puzzlemaker with this masterpiece, Chander! It's impressive how you have used all those mechanics into such a small space with such that fine ability. Dude, I'm amazed that there's only one damn solution for every step (at least I hope my solutions are the ones!)

This map so so clever that I think I've seen it all. Really. Unless you, Chander and maybe Jonatan join your strength and make a map altogether, I frankly think everything about Portal2 hard puzzles and clever maps has been already discovered.

Congratulations again and man, Thanks a ton for mapping stuff like that!

THIS PUZZLE IS SIMPLY INCREDIBLE

(Sorry for such those bad editted videos but I wanted to upload the solution quickly... Oops... and sorry for killing the companion cube, was not necessary! )

I'm still working on this, but from what I can tell so far, it's not so much a puzzle as it is a skill test.. how fast can you shoot a portal kind of thing.. doesn't exactly require the sharpest mind, but does require some advanced skills.. I'll keep at it, but maps of this kind just are not all that fun...

Wow, that took me over 2 hours... but awesome - only slightly ninja, but on the whole, logic!
After the first mental manoeuvre to get the reflecto cube I kinda naively assumed it would get easier, but no, a double helping of brain melt. Thanks, it's an instant favourite for me too =)

Edit:

Excuse the choppy cuts -- I was experimenting with joining multi part demos over the millions of quicksaves this took :p

El, it happened the same to me... I already complained about the placement helpers. Dude, it took me ages to get the cube ON the ceiling button: even trying to raise little by little the bridge (same as sicklebrick does in his video), the cube kept falling down once and again... That was the most annoying part. It's a realy pity since the puzzle is impeccable!

If you check my video, I finally succeed shooting the floor portal parallel to the wall (below the floor button...). Looks like this way the ceiling button is better aligned with the portal... right?

Greyjarel, please add info_placement_helpers! At least 3 of them:

  • On the front white wall panel right below the ceiling cube
  • Right below the floor button
  • Right below the celiling buttton

(I'd suggest a 3rd too below the light bridge!)

Thanks!

Haha, right. In that case, I might wait and see if greykarel takes josepezdj's advice and puts some placement helpers in. I was going insane trying that.

I'm looking forward to finishing this, though (if I can), mainly so I can settle down and watch sicklebrick's vid afterwards....

Any luck moving the other portal to raise the bridge a little?
You've got more precise control of the portal on the bridge side, and can shuffle it about 32 units sideways and somehwere between 8 & 16 vertically. Also, it helps a lot if your cube is dead center, so it doesn't warp through.

To be honest though, if you always travel sideways in the portals (i.e. use strafe instead of forwards\backwards), and line yourself up sideways before trying to move, or jump into a wall, then the only real tricky bits I'd say would be going from the panel above the door to the top floor in the reflecto cube room and that balancing act we just mentioned.

Still a bastard to try and record in a oner though... I'm wondering if GreyKarel just makes an impossible looking map then spends a day or so deciding if it can infact be solved! >.<

Jose, thank you for testing and highly estimated my humble work. Chander and Jonatan is the level I always try to reach.
Well I must say that there is placement_helpers on the front white wall panel right below the ceiling button and below the light bridge and for me they works fine. In new version I made there radius wider and and placed the first one a bit higher, hope this fix makes it not so frustrating for oters. The two other places you mentioned don't need any helpers for you can place a portal there any way you like. And even more a placement_helper under the ceiling button can prevent the intended solution for getting the laser cube.
As for your solution, the way you've got the laser cube is not exactly intended. My way is harder and much more impressive. So I've fixed that too.
New version is available.

Yeah, that's the way I make my maps.

I don't quite understand this. Do you want me to record my own walkthrough?

Hey Grey!

I was fearing that you didn't set the info_placement_helpers correctly after testing the new version and I took the liberty of decompiling your map. I was right. Please check:

You should set these 2 values to YES in order to make the info_placement_helpers work

I'm testing the new version now anyway!

Nice small map!
Feel kinda dizzy now because of all that bouncing up and down
My mouse really had a lot of work to do there^^
Most of the time I knew that to do next but it took me about 20 tries tocatch the cube and place it on the button while still flinging. But I like physical challenges
Clear 5 from me! Such a complex puzzle in such a small map... Impressive

@josepezdj Thank you, I never cared about this two points. But for me it works as it is. See a picture below: where the crosshair is and where a portal appears. Should it work another way?

@marKiu Glad you like it. And I guess you solved it the intended way. Thank you.

Oh, lol, not calling you a bastard. Just saying it was super difficult to try and record a playthrough in one take >.< Eventually I set up 10 keybinds to record 10 demos and joined the parts together

Dude I can assure you that for me the helpers don't work at all. Indeed if I want them to work properly I always set those 2 values to Yes... give it a try and check the difference, because I think you'll notice

Finally managed it! Took literally over half an hour of constant quickloading to get the cube on the button without it falling, then another hour or so to work out what the hell to do next... Although after getting the redirection cube I kind of breezed through the rest. I'm going to hold off on rating to see if either a) there's a much better way to do the first part that doesn't require 5 thousand quickloads or b) greykarel manages to make it a little easier to execute the way I did it. I really want to give it a 5, as I thought the general idea was fantastic, but as it stands it was way too frustrating to warrant it.

Jose and everyone else who has trouble with that helpers, I'm sorry they don't work for you propperly.
But I assure that in version 1.1 I place the cube on the bridge pressing the button almost every time I manage to place a portal on the wall while the cube is over appearing bridge (so it takes 2-3 tryes).
And unfortunately I can't get to my PC and hummer to try to fix it until tomorrow.

Hehe, about that: Grey, as I decompiled your map I was able to see that amazing mapping skills you have! You introduced a system based in a portal_detector on the wall panel to A) open the portal it its right position and B) subsitute a cube for another one that is specifically spawned on the button pressing it.

Incredible workaround!

AAArgh, I actually managed to solve this one - amazing. The hardest part for me was getting up under the light bridge - seemed the only way though... It is a very hard map, not sure I can say it was "fun" - lots of frustration and tries to execute tricks....Thanks for creating.

Well, with or without placement helpers, this puzzle continues being amazing.

As changes with version 1.1 removed part of my solution, I've recorded a new run for v1.1:

uLbSZTbMTjg

Slightly more difficult but still solvable. I hope this time all is intended Grey!

Wow, Jose it's amazing. You've even outdone me. I don't want to reveal it here so I don't tell why, may be you'll understand it yourself if you take a look at .vmf and what I tell you in the last PM about game facilities.
In the rest the way you did it is quite what I meant. Congratulations

I don't think Chell had much fun while testing for glados.

And here is how easy it could be with the first part (intended for ver. 1 and sometimes can happen in ver. 1.1)

That was great! Took roughly about 2 hours and multiple quickloads within that period, but it was overall a great puzzle and highly satisfying. Together with "Devil's chamber" by Jonatan and "Chronologic" my MarKiu, this ranks within my top 3 maps!
Thank you very much for creating
