Here it is. The latest map in my series. Its the biggest map I've ever made and it took me nearly a year to make but it's finally, finally done

Download: http://forums.thinking.withportals.com/dload.php?action=file&file_id=331

Anyway heres some brief details and a few screenies:

PMK 5 is split into two fairly large sections, the latter of which involves the companion cube. Advanced and challenge versions are included and also two small bonus maps were made just for fun

Enjoy

Awesome. It's been almost a year since PMK 4, so I'm excited.

Edit: I played it and was very satisfied. There was one part that I had to tunnel, as I could not find the expected solution, but it was not a huge deal. It is where there are two buttons on either side of a door, both which control the door (right after some turrets). I did have one major problem, though.

When you first get to the companion cube, the game kept crashing for me. I think if you let go of it, then the game doesn't know what to do. I finally got it to work, but it crashed 3 times before I did.

That was the best Portal map I have ever played in a great while. It was worth waiting for.

I like the Cake pieces in were you collected them to unlock more maps.. The music was a grand slam and over all the 5a and 5b rooms were epic.

I might do a video on this map, cause thats how much I like it.

Keep up the great work.

I had the same problem a few times and have tried anything to fix it but with no result. I'll keep looking into it and let you know. Sorry for the inconvience dude. Also tunneling isn't required for that room unless you lose the cube by throwing it on the ledge your ment to jump to.

The bonus maps should unlock when you collect the cakes. 3 cakes for 5a and all the cakes for 5b. Did you try this?

I did and I had lost a few custom sounds and textures as well as some work on the map, but I recreated the lost assets and luckily a slightly earlier version of the maps was saved elsewhere.

This is without a doubt the best map of the PMK serie. It is obivious how much work went into it by looking at how huge and detailed it is. Also the music is really creepy and atmospheric and added a lot to the experience.

I found all the hidden cakes after my second playthrough, and at least one of them had me thinking hard on how to reach it. This is a really great idea to have the bonus rooms unlocked by finding cake.

I beat the advanced version too. I liked it because despite being harder, it wasnt impossible like some other advanced chambers i've seen. The bonus map were short and sweet. I really liked the 'bullet time' fonction of 5a, it'd be interesting to see this concept implemented in a larger map. 5b was great too, i achieved gold on the portal challenge and almost made silver on the time one. I've been up all night playing it and i had to force myslelf to go to sleep or else i would still be trying to beat that challenge...

With this release you made my day, thank you !

One thing though, while i was looking for cake, i managed to portal myslef under the grid that is on the floor in the main room of the second act. I was sure there would be something there but when i saw missing textures and i realized i was trapped, i figured that going there was not intended.

Really? I did "lose" the cube intentionally and then used the turrets to get on the ledges in the other room to gain more momentum so I could cross the pit in the first room. I thought that was the intended solution
This is a great map, with puzzles that get you stumped for a while. I found only five pieces of cake but it was a nice touch. I started bonus map 5b manually
I would recommend to play this map to everyone

Yeah I tried that. I think the probelm involved the BMZ file not extracting the two bonus maps or their images because it worked when I did that manually (using WinRAR).

Well, you've really outdone yourself (again)! I can totally see why it took so long to make this map.

The design is great, as always, and I especially love the non-linear second part and, of course, the cake hunt! (It took me quite a few times playing all through to find all those suckers.) Although it got a bit easier once I realised that the cakes are evenly distributed through the map, one in each major puzzle section.

I'm also excited by your prototype bullet-time puzzle. Nice to see that all that collaborative research over on the bullet time thread wasn't for nothing.

Excellent work!

In my opinion, this is the best PMK map of them all. I like all the PMK maps but this one takes the cake, pun intended. Very challenging, and I love the way you can collect pieces of cake in order to unlock the bonus maps. I managed to find all six on the second run through.

Are there any plans for a PMK 6? It's going to be tough to beat this one.

I'm so glad all that time spent was worth it. I can't thank you all enough for the awesome comments and I'm flattered that alot of people say it's the best map I've done. I was unsure if I had made the map too big and not spent enough time on tweeking the puzzles. Anyway thanks again to everyone. PMK 6 will definately begin development as soon as possible (after my crappy exams most likely) but I do have to say in advance tho that the next map won't be quite as ambitious as this one. This took alot longer to make than I anticipated.

I was planning to release a map pack once PMK 6 was done but I could make one now if you want. Thats no problem if you don't mind waiting a week or so. I'll give you the picture for PMK 5 in the meantime anyway. Cheers dude

Nice one Siiig. I completely forgot about fixing portal bumping and that first one you found I might leave in as it looks harder to do that than solving the puzzle normally. (is the backwards speed jump trick regarded as a cheat/glitch?)

Cheers for that anyway dude. I'll get to work on a new version and fix all the problems brought up so far.

Thanks again mate

Good map(s)! The sound and graphics are among the best I've seen. Too bad I weary of when it gets too difficult. Can I get a walkthrough please?

I encountered a few bugs. The game crashed for me just when the floor was about to retract. It happened severel times before it suddenly just worked. The unlock function for the challenges seems to be glitchy too. I appreciated the cake gathering though. Great idea! The bonus maps were also fun.

I'm really sorry about the crashing. I've also encountered it ever since I built the lower half of the map. Havn't been able to get rid of it yet mainly because I have no idea why it crashes. I have just thought I might have a trigger which removes the player from the world causing a crash. I'll investigate.
Also, whats wrong with the unlocking system. Could you explain what you did and what happened plz dude?

I'm tempted to say all, because I feel like I'm doing everything the "wrong way" . I'm going to be a little bit more modest in my request though. For the moment I'm stuck in the advanced chamber. It's the room with the ball launcher and ball catchers that can be elevated and lowered by buttons.

mazk1985 wrote:

It only happened when I ran the map on my other computer. I got enough cakes to get the message that said that the 5a bonus map was unlocked. Later, when I wanted to open it, it was still locked.

I just unlocked 5B after going back through and finding all the pieces (brilliant hide on the last one I found BTW, I'm sure you know which one).
For some reason on 5B, there is a chance to obtain two pieces of cake from the immediate piece. Not really sure why but it happened twice, and allowed me to skip the last piece on the challenges I was doing...

Was able to complete the chamber in Least Portal challenge, 20 portals. I could cut it down using several edge glitches but I decided to only stick to ABH'ing and item climbing.

2 things: Firstly, for some reason nothing is unlocking. not even advanced or challenges.

The good news is that this was not one of these maps :b

Awesome map! I loved it! I loved the first bonus map (3 slices). The idea was pretty good, and i hope to see it in some of your next maps. When you fell into the big chamber with the 3 switches i was like "OMG THE FACILITY IS FALLING APEART!". Nicely done. (Deja v? - I know last time i tried this i said Deja v? too - This is not your map, the feeling i had while writing this).

Once again: Awesome map! Make more!

I've not looked into why they aren't unlocking yet. I'm pretty sure everything is set up right. Does anyone have similar problems with other maps?

Hmm. I'm not a fan of item climbing and I would regard that as a glitch. As for ABH'ing I'm undecided on whether or not it should be considered a glitch as it's an advanced move that requires some degree of skill. Im more leaning towards glitch tho tbh. Still 20 portals is pretty good. Nice one

Cheers dude. I had to have at least one cheeky piece On 5b tho I've had the same prob and I've looked at every part of the logic on the map carefully but I still can't figure it out. Absolutely no idea why it only happens sometimes. Also I have no idea why the map crashes during the wcc bit before the fall. I've seriously lowered the amount of brushes used in the falling section but havn't tested it yet. Hopefully it will help.

Thanks dude. I'm glad you liked my little surprise when you get the WCC. As for putting the feature on bonus 5a into other maps. PMK maps are the best I have ever seen. Every detail of every map is flawless. I am continually amazed at the perfect balance between difficulty and fun. Out of all the maps I've played... and I have played everything worth playing... PMK maps are the ones I enjoy over and over again. This latest map pack is incredible and deserves the highest credit for the introduction of the cake slice collecting.

You mean that it has the sv_cheats 1 and 0 showing? Cause if that's the ONLY thing you don't like use "hud_saytext_time 0" this makes the text not appear at all and all other HUD will show if there should be some. Now if it's not what you meant but at all that people can use noclip by accident (bind) or like can't get achievements, i see what you mean.

To minimise the risk of leaving players with sv_cheats enabled when they quit the map prematurely, I would recommend to only have sv_cheats enabled while the effect is active, and turn it back off as soon as the timer expires. (Also the hud_saytext_time.)

I will definitely use this in my next map pack.

I can't thank you enough dude. I'm really pleased that you enjoyed my maps. I strive to get the fun/difficulty balance right and I'm really glad you mentioned it. Thanks again dude

On a side note I wanna say a few details about the PMK 1-5 map pack I'm working on. I'm gonna add 6 cake pieces to PMK 1-4 which will unlock the bonus maps like PMK 5 (same ones from my previous map pack btw) but since PMK 4 never came with bonus maps I'll make two new ones for them. Also I'm gonna update the old bonus maps so they have start/finish elevators and generally look a bit tidier. Lastly, what does everyone think to manually installing the map pack as opposed to using a bmz? I only ask because I have to bspzip everything for bmz's. I don't mind either way I'm just curious if it's a big deal

I would say, go for the manual install. It saves a lot of trouble on your part and making a BMZ doesn't make the installation that much more convenient, in my opinion.

LOL

You can reach the first cake with a so called step fling. You place two portals on the high and low platforms, as close together as possible. Then you jump from the high platform into the lower portal, then quickly steer so you go into the lower portal again etc. With each fling, you gain altitude until you are high enough to grab the cake. It works best when you put the long side of each portal against the edge of the platform.

Completed the map and got all 6 cakes this time. Cake #5 was obvious and easy, and that's why I missed it first time. I got cake #6 the first time through, but I had already completed room 6 without even discovering the upstairs room. I managed to fling myself up to the switch without the long fall (ironically using step flings), and only discovered the upper room when I accidentally knocked the power ball up there. I do everything backwards.

Even with all the cakes found, advanced map #5a still isn't open for me. 5b is, though.

I can't believe so many people are having problems with unlocking the maps. Just goes to show the source engine isn't too great since it can't do simple triggers right. Sorry for the bitching but there is literally nothing more I can do to fix the double cake problem on bonus 5b and fixing the unlocking problem. Does anyone have any ideas? In the mean time to unlock it manually go to your portal folder in steamapps and in the directory called SAVE their should be a file called bonus_map_data. Open this file in notepad and insert the following where the stars are located: ```
"maps/PMK_5/pmk_5.bns"
      {
         "PMK 5: Challenges"
         {
            "lock"      "0"
         }
         "PMK 5: Advanced"
         {
            "lock"      "0"
         }
         "PMK 5"
         {
            "complete"      "1"
         }

"Bonus 5a"
         {
            "lock"      "0"
         }

}
```
I didn't have any problems with the bonus maps. They both unlocked as I collected the cake. I can't understand why so many others are having problems with this.
Hi!
Played this map yesterday. It's great and awesome, loved it!
The advanced ones were really hard, some parts beated me totally for a while.
Although I had problems with unlocking the challenge maps. I had to finish the advanced one two times until it was unlocked.
And I only found 4 cakes. Guess I have to check everything again, I was really impressed with the "bullet time" idea of bonus map 1.
Same here, I really only had trouble finding one cake...and in reality that's because its really the only "hard" one to find. coughturret roomcough
P = "Portaller". Remember if he maps for Portal, he must have played Portal.
It could be one of those recursive acronyms? Like, for example, WINE (a program to run Windows software on other OSes) that stands for WINE Is Not An Emulator
So you're suggesting PMK could as well be AMK, BMK, CMK, ..., ZMK? Then why the hell it's PMK, not AMK or BMK or whatever?
If that's the case, then why not PMK? P is just as good a letter as any of the others.
For the example given, WINE, W is selected so it makes up an English word, but there's no three-letter English word ending in MK. So yup, it's as good as it would be AMK, BMK, CMK, ..., ZMK.
I would normally tell you but it's too much fun letting you guys trying to figure it out
This may or may not help: I came up with the full alias when I was making music as a kid and abbreviated it to PMK once I reached the age where I realised how lame it was. Also you got the K right and are close with the M except its Maz_ _ _. P doesn't stand for anything Portal related tho
Sorry to tease. I promise I'll tell you soon unless someone gets it
Take "the easiest cake", place a O next to a cake which is near a wall high up and a O on floor, take that cake and double fling to second level (like at the very beginning of Chamber 15), take both cakes there, then place a O near the "statue" (not very near), jump into a O, take a cake there, then, when on a statue, jump into a O, then get to the last cake, jump down to second level, go to the exit.
Understand now?
EDIT: I finally did it in 0:31.
That's an incredibly awesome level you have there.
I only missed one piece of cake. D:
My only complaint is bouncing the combine ball off of the WCC.
Also, Path 2 in the "2nd act" can be done without the companion cube.
I have been working on PMK 5 - Least Portals Challenge for 4 months now. Not 4 months straight! I just work on it when I am not working on work (shh - don't tell my boss). I really enjoy your maps as I have commented in another post. I don't want the solution... but I am at a point where I would really appreciate a clue to completing the map with only 29 Portals. Here is my progress...
Room 1 - 4 Portals
Room 2 - 4 Portals
Room 3 - 11 Portals
Lower:
Path 1 - 3 Portals
Path 2 - 4 Portals
Path 3 - 5 Portals
31 Portals is the best I can do 'So Far' (I never give up on a puzzle).
PMK... Can you give me a clue to your intended solution of 29 Portals? Which Room / Path am I using too many Portals?
Path 3 - 5 Portals
Okay...
It's not higher Room 1, because today I figured out a way to do it in 4 portals.
It's not any of lower paths (actually I knew one part where you can portal bump, but apparently in later Portal updates this isn't present).
So it's either higher Room 2 or 3.
ASBusinessMagnet wrote:
I finally figured it out today. It was actually higher Room 3 And lower Path 3. Here are my final results:
Higher:
Room 1 - 4 Portals
Room 2 - 4 Portals
Room 3 - 10 Portals
Lower:
Path 1 - 3 Portals
Path 2 - 4 Portals
Path 3 - 4 Portals
I was able to save one portal in higher Room 3 by getting to the other side of the room with only 2 portals. It is a hard portal jump that takes a few tries... but I think that is the point.
PMK's Challenges are always extremely difficult and push the limits of what you think is possible.
The final portal was saved in lower Path 3 with another very difficult portal jump that I didn't think was possible.
I really enjoyed this least portal challenge.
Also, I know I said ages ago that I would repackage all 5 maps into one downloadable pack with cake piece updates to maps 1-4. Well I havn't forgotten about it except I've started work on PMK 6 and I'm gonna wait to release the complete PMK pack once the last level is finished.
Hey dude! I played all 5 of your maps today. Each one of them was better than the last and certainly PMK 5 is the best. It's an awesome map. You have a very good balance between difficulty and fun. I'm one of those who tend to quit a map when it has impossible and non-sense flinging; but the flingings in your map were quite reasonable.The surprise when the facility falls down was great. I was so into the game that I felt like it was an earthquake After falling down on the ground, watching the companion cube falling from the sky after me was a heartbreaking experience
I didn't see any cakes but if I knew that finding cakes was going to unlock the extra levels I would look more carefully. Anyway I'm too lazy to play it again.
Thanks for all the fun man. Have you released PMK 6 yet?
