Thanks everyone who beta tested my map! I've fixed all the problems and shortcuts to the map. I also added many aesthetic features and rebuilt the cubemaps to make the map look amazing. I want all of you to try the map out for yourself even if you already played this map already before, you might find some steps different

Again the download link is here

Flying sheep made me a template for the Bonus Maps so I hope you guys enjoy being able to play with the challenges.

People who can prove that they beat the map with only 10 portals will get the privilege of beta testing my next map. There are at least 2 ways to do so. Good luck!

Hey everyone! Just finished the beta of my first map and would like everyone's criticism. I tried to stay true to the taste and logic of the original Portal levels, so I hope you guys enjoy a challenge. The map is about 95% done and 100% playable. I would like you guys to leave your opinions, find glitches, and if everything went smoothly, give me good estimates on how long it took you, the difficulty, and how many portals it took.

Thanks. Ignore the weirdly lit elevator shaft at the end. I'll fix it.

That rocked! Sitting there with the energy ball, after trying four or five times, and then seeing that cube sitting there, happy as can be.

I didn't notice any problems, the sound effects were nice, especially on the elevator to say "I'm over here, come look at me."

Only real complaint is make that freaking slit a little wider, if possible. Trying to shoot through it took me six or seven tries.

The moving platform could stand to move a bit quicker.

Overall, excellent job.

Probably took ten minutes, I guess. I lost track of time, sorta. As for number of portals, I'd put it at about 14, if I got everything on the first try.

Yeah everything was good except for that slot and the moving platform.

the slot was pretty easy to get after a little patience but definantly the sliding platform... for people who dont realize it at the start they would get stranded out there and have to reset so that was kinda a nuisance but overall good =D

Given that it was the first puzzle and therefore very close to the start, as well as the fact that adding a way to portal out of it would ruin the puzzle, I let it slide. However, it occurs to me that if you made the platform not kick you off, and instead came back to where it started (without unpressing the button), it would stop you from getting truly "stuck"

Yes, I just realized something; you guys played the last part not like how I intended, I'll work on a fix. There is a reason why you get kicked off the platform.

[EDIT]hold on, can u tell me how u guys beat the level? use spoiler code or pm me. I can easily fix being stuck on the island with a portable ceiling.

started the level grabbed the box from the one boxxed area then from there found out the area above via the arrows from there box on the button then trying to get to the platform then accidently almost died in water... but jumped out <might wanna fix that btw from there got up then used the wall technique to get the ball into the catcher then brought the box back down then used it to get a height to shoot into the room, shoot the ceiling to throw the box into then from there took the box off the button
and jumped into the water from the platform then to the platform then brang the box to the ending
yes i know i need better english :l idc either sry about that!

nice ending, i like that the elevator 'works' and that it disconnects you; good closure. but the puzzles are sort of tedious, so keep working on those. nice mapping skills, enjoyed it!

Very fun and nicely built map. It could use a few things fixed (such as being able to get yourself out of the water) and maybe a little more interesting graphics, maybe some indicator strips, but overall a good map.

Finally a map which actually looks like a test chamber rather than a maze!

Good fun. I am pretty sure I did it the intended way, But yeah, make the slit a bit bigger. and maybe some way to get off the island.

Easily a portable wall in the same room could fix the problem if you get stuck on the island. This was my first thought on reading that some people got stuck. I, however did not, but YES please make the slit a little bigger.

I noticed at the beginning by the floor on the corners there not 100% completed. There not connected with the wall is what I saw.

Yay i got gold in portals used!! But I got it a bit better than 10 portals...

And no I used no cheats whatsoever, just good old exploits
If you want to know how I did it just ask.
A good player would be able to do it in 2 portals btw...

Oh yeah and most walls are purple to me as you can see.
And you can shoot a portal through the slot without activating the elevator now. It's a only a gap of like 1-2 units but if you align yourself right you can do it.(http://i23.tinypic.com/swacy9.jpg)

Yay I got two portals!

And I'm pretty sure the purple thing is a problem on my side. Also it seems to be related to cubemaps, as I don't think I had a problem with the old version.

Mine IS in the challenge section. It's just that the challenge doesn't end where it's supposed to. How do you set it up?

It's not a secret or anything so I'll just post it here.
First I got the box at the elevator. Then I used that to wallclimb up to the second floor. There is stood on the button to let the orb out, and then I used the box to deflect it into the catcher. Then I used the box and the X sign by the door to jump up to the other box.
Then I placed one box on a closed portal, and brought the other downstairs. Then I shot a portal through the slot to let the box on the portal through and activate the last door, and used the box I had thrown down to wallclimb up to the exit!

If you don't know what wallclimbing is, it's standing on a box and jumping and picking it up really fast. Doing that you will rise up slowly, but if you're not pressed up against a wall you'll fall off. It can be seen around 1:00 in this video http://youtube.com/watch?v=PS4_e4Bra8I

wallclimbing... i don't think you're suppose to do that D: hahaha

Wallclimbing is a pretty -worthy tactic by tricking the physics engine.

Well I did say that I used exploits... And besides this is the way speedruns/challenges are going to be done in portal, like it or not.

Hey Ebola (and everyone else),

Great work on the map. Had fun completing it after some initial head scratching.

I did however have a slight technical issue with the floor in the upper level. I know you don't have to use it to complete the level, but I thought it might have been useful in cutting down the number of portals used to complete the level. It shows up as a portable surface, but when I open a portal on it and a connecting portal elsewhere, neither the player nor the cube will go through. This happens when trying to enter through the floor portal and exit through it. Is this just me or are other people having the same issue?

Keep up the good work,
117

I got that too. Couldn't pass through a portal on the floor.

I completed this in 5 portals (no wall climbing)
And I truly hope people don't resort to wall climbing as the "official" way to beat their custom maps. This is a puzzle game! Use puzzles to make it hard, not exploits that only some people can do.

If you really don't want some one to wall climb, make a tiny ledge that sticks over the edge so it won't let u go up further .

Sorry about the video I didn't realize there was a bandwidth limit on that server. And I deleted the video after I uploaded it :X I'll make another later.

I need everyone who has the pink wall error to reply on what video card they use. I'm estimating that around 10% of the old video cards have problems with the cubemaps that I compiled in a certain way.

When I was playing through the map, the ball puzzle room was horrifically bright. Even with my gamma turned way down, I could hardly tell where the ball was.

The room behind the elevator was bright too but you knew about that.

Really good fun. Quite challenging, and different from all the levels in portal. Good fun.

Also what other people have been complaining - couldn't portal through the floor.

Did it in 5 portals on first run. Pretty easy once you've got a look around, but still fun to play. One thing you must yo, however, is make a light strip from the orb catcher to the rising platform, so people will know where to go. Otherwise a nice map. All the unportable textures and the water had pink squares, though.

This is one of the better custom maps that I have played so far, though being able to do it with 5 portals on my first try kind of took the fun out of the fewest portals records.

As for glitches:

1. The small portable platform in the toxic water did not work the 2nd time I tried to use it, and I had to restart the map. By not working I mean that I was able to make a portal on it, but not go through the portal (the other portal was on the ground in the upper room if that helps).

2. If you destroy your cubes, you don't get them back.

3. Because the elevator is completely automated, you can get a cube jammed in it, completely disabling the elevator and requiring you to restart the map. This could be fixed by using an elevator that only moves up when you are standing on it (like the elevators at the end of Chamber 15).

So far I've done the least portals challenge, all very polished and articulated. However I've had to swim a few times in water... and survived.

After playing your latest map I just had to come back and check this one out. It was a well thought out map. By the look of things cubes wouldn't respawn if they fell into the hazard liquid though, not a problem though seeing as how this map was made such a long time ago.

I made a lot of mistakes in the development of this level that I wasn't aware of until years of experience later. Not to mention, the design itself lacks puzzle communication, aesthetics variation, and pacing. I blame these old community members on spoiling me back then, hehe. The best thing I learned from this level is to design for the player, not yourself or anyone else for that matter. (I picked myself for this map. Shame on me.)

On a different note, if I remember correctly, I made this map before the official tools and examples came out. Valve has done us a huge service by streamlining the level creation pipeline for Portal 2. If anyone has an interest in making Portal 2 puzzles, it's only about an hour to make your first working level. Don't hesitate based on the dauntingness of the editor, it's very forgiving.
