Hello! This is my first map for Portal, and I would like to think of it as being of a reasonably high standard. Many thanks to Rivid31 for the button and door tutorial, and also to y-aji for the elevator template. I look forward to constructive feedback and being a productive member of this community! A pretty short and simple map. Though to actually get to the end, I had to Put orange on the ceiling of the glass fall area, then a blue at the base of the turret. Just as i'm falling through the blue, shoot another blue on the ceiling directly above the turret. That way I could break all 3 panes of glass. Otherwise, I could just break the first one and get trapped by the crushinator.

Oh, and when facing the cake and cake image, there's a lot of no draw texture (I think thats what it's called at least). I can see into the turret room, and I shouldn't be able to.

I was aware there was several ways to complete this map, and smashing through the glass I was aware (and happy) for that to be a possible solution, but the nodraw texture problems worry me because it worked fine... mind placing a screenshot of the problem? (Only if you have time, mind you!)

I'll gladly help in any way I know how.

Hope that helps.

Hi, and welcome to the TWP community. Remember to stop by the wiki and pitch in if you have something to add!

Also, to make our job of managing the files we host here easier, could you upload the map to the Download Database and link to it, instead of having it attached here?

http://youtube.com/watch?v=Xw-CATl0gyULittle bit more detail here than with the screen shot. I asked the people in the IRC chat, and the general consensus is that you used an overlay as a texture, instead of an overlay.I'm just a tester/enthusiast, so my knowledge of this sort of stuff is pretty limited.

Fine, give full credit to Msleeper. He's the genius.

Seriously though... Did you use that as an texture on a brush (maybe even a decal, not sure) instead of an overlay?

Yeah, made a square 64 high, 1 width brush with the nodraw texture, then made the front with the signage/signage_overlay_cake "texture" although it's fairly obvious now that it's an overlay... It worked when I tested it.. any way I can fix the problem while using the same image? (By the way, thanks msleeper! )
Made the map in the Download Database, linked to it in first post. Thanks for the warm welcome and all the help!

Sorry for the late reply, had an English exam...

This is what it looks like on my computer.. any reason?

The right way to do it is to make the whole wall the metal texture. Then browse for the cake texture, click on the "overlay" button on the left side (third from the bottom) and then just click on the wall where you want the cake picture to be. You can adjust its size and move it around if you want to

A note about overlays, you can only have a maximum of 8 per surface (any more than that won't get drawn), but the upside is that you can resize them. Decals are good because you aren't limited to a number per face, but you can't resize them and they are a little outdated in general.

Good information... I had no idea

ok i just tried it out and...

when i broke the first pane of glass in the floor, and went in there and the walls began to close. i just stood there to see if that would kill me. at the last moment, before i could die, the glass broke and i found myself down below, easily able to complete the level... is that how that was supposed to play out?

so the second time around i chose some slightly better angles, and got the launcher to break all the glass for me. then i noticed this little bit of quirkiness...
