Description

small and challenging This is first part of the MiniPuzzles series and actually MY FIRST MAP, so don't wait too much. I tried to make it as detailed as I can and keep original portal style. It is small puzzle (in the sense it is example map) , but I think it is conveniently difficult. Say if you liked it, and I promise make them more if you like :D NOW THIS PACK INCLUDES ADVANCED VERSION TOO! How to play: 1. download "MiniPuzzlesFinal.rar" file and extract to "steam/steamapps/user/portal/portal". Rar file includes manual for more information!!! 2. Folder named MiniPuzzles will appear to your bonusmaps window and you're ready to play. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thank you guys who helped me. I almost gave up, if you haven't helped me. And if you find something that I made wrong etc. , tell me please. ps. There is no cake, so don't bother to look for it!! ;) UPDATE 1: I made it looks better and fix that bad wall (DIDN'T SOLVE PROBLEM, WALLS ARE STILL INVISIBLE, WAIT FOR UPDATE 2) UPDATE 2: Walls fixed, added entry elevator,added some detail. Tell me are walls now normal. UPDATE 3: Added final details, modifed lighting, added gman and professor Einstein and chamber signs. Made advanced version too. Added manual and included black cube and gun.

Ok I tried it and here are my thoughts.

I did not like the the way it started. I just went poof and I was there! Make it start in a bed or a elevator!

You were missing textures! And the model was a normal cube. I though it would been cool to have that cube on my PC but it was a normal cube..

But it was good, next time thought put it in a .rar file and and put the .ain file as well, Since I was missing textures, I could not tell if the cubemaps were built. But it was a tricky one though. But now try making two of small puzzle rooms in one .vmf file. It will make it longer!

He has another skin for the cube that he made/got. He did not package it so no one can have it.

I liked this puzzle, except for the epic fail where you get the companion cube, everything there was like un-rendered.

And the glow of the button doesn't show at a certain distance (this could just be a problem with Portal though, I don't know).

Also Duffedwaffe, where did you get that black skin for your Portal Gun? It looks better than the one I have.

What the fuck is with those walls!!? I used default textures and it worked fine on my computer. well, I'll try to compress it again. And I pack that custom cube with it

Just finished playing it. I must admit that the puzzle was very clever. Not too easy and not too hard, and, most importantly, the completion didn't depend on luck, as in many other maps
I had the original cube skin too, and there were those nodrawn faces you see on screenshots. Get that fixed and you will have a much better map
// oh and the start "poof and I was there" would need improvement, such as when you start in an elevator. It is not that hard to do it this way, when you have prefabs

i wouldn't just yet, could be ONLY him that has the problem, i haven't got to look at it yet. I've seen errors like that when i alt-tab out of the program. could be whats going on here.
before you do any major reconstruction or reuploading (thus breaking the DLDB) i'd see if anyone else has the issue

I had no problems at all, and I must say that I greatly enjoyed this map because for once its all about LOGIC and not precise timing with absurd flings. That said, I dont think I solved it the intended way
Did the intended way involve jumping on a sign?

No it doesn't You can solve this puzzle without single jump. Try to solve it in that way

nice

i managed to kill the cube (not the companion cune, but the one that is in the dispenser... lol)
then when i push the button it doesnt do anything... it waits for a bit then the button depresses... lol

Also I still have that problem with the missing wall textures, and both times I have run the map straight after the game has loaded so there can't be any problems with the source renderer. I am thinking that maybe the map hasn't downloaded correctly, since all the un-rendered walls were un-portalable (a word?) and in the video they were portalable.

I enjoyed the map, though i'm not sure if did the last part right, getting the companion cube on the button, but i also think i may have gotten it... well i don't know, great map anyway.

I packed that box texture to bsp with pakrat , but I'm not sure did I it right. So try if it is black box now. And btw I build cubemaps like there is wiki, but when I after that make bmz file and run map from it, cubemaps haven't any effect in map, metalwalls aren't reflective anymore, like they're after cubemaps building

Nope. But the map was a improvement!

-It started with an elevator!
-No missing textures!

But however I did not like the file name being "16140819718bdd6b493c1bcf0ef00bf3"

And maybe it should have a Chamber sign?

good idea, one from the original game might be used, if the author doesn't want to spend all the day creating a custom one (the custom one will also be big in size, from my own experience).

If you rename the bsp file after building the cubemaps, the cubemaps will break. I think it is mentioned somewhere in the wiki or forum. But don't build cubemaps twice. Just recomile the map and build them over again (don't forget non-HDR along with HDR).

Fail. The cubes textures are still missing, but at least I can now use the portable surface which was unportable 'cos of the un-renderedness.

Fix the cube and this map will have epicness, If possible could you have the Hand-Held Portal Device actually start out inside the pedestal and then it will raise up when the elevator doors open, it would make a nice effect.

You could have the animations for it closing reversed maybe?

Do you have WinRAR?

If so, try putting the .vmt and the .vmf files of the cube model/skin. If in a folder that you/someone else made, copy the folder and put it in your map .bns folder. Tell us were to put it and right click on you folder and select "Add "your_file.rar"

..Or any other way you can without WinRAR.

WinRAR is free you know, so why not use it?

You will find it says that the trial has expired but if you just press close and it will let you keep using it.

finally managed to complete this without jumping on the sign (thanks to that youtube video by inferne89... lol)

it quite dark when u first come out of the elevator.... shouldnt it be a bit lighter there?



on the irrelevant side: i managed to figure out how to destroy/get rid of any object (that i have come across so far [turrent, box, radio, spanner etc]) that u can carry... its weird... lol... dunno if anyone else has figured out how to do this...

Did you complete it with portal from portal style like infernet did? if you did, try to comlete it with only those techniques that are used in normal portal maps (not advanced) And I tried to add chamber sign to emit light ( I copyed it from normal portal map, + all relays and triggers and toggles and autologics, but it is black when I play the map.

Yeah, I managed that winrar think out long time ago

Is this supposed to be a .bmz file, because I only get a zip file from the link.

Just extract everything (including the backup file) into the maps folder?

Weird packaging/installation and texture problems aside...
Awesome map!
1) No GlaDOS for once! Woot!
2) Map with only one placeable portal that is still fun? More power to ya!
3) Really small but still really complicated = I like.

I wasn't a fan of throwing boxes up there, since that was the only hit-or-miss gameplay in your map, but it worked.
I got a bit confused with the companion cube. I thought that since it was a companion cube, I'd need to bring it beyond the second door for some other area (since it's my companion!), so I was trying to figure out where to put it so that I could grab it later, and be able to leave the normal cube behind. I would have like if it was just another normal cube so that the player knows that neither one gets priority is more important.
Also: yeah...please push in the two signs more so the player can't jump on them to get up. I thought that since there were the up arrows next to the sign, that meant I had to jump on it.

Overall: visually simple and pleasing map that had a couple of tiny issues, but had a strong puzzle foundation. I hope you make more of these small maps!

For first question here is clue: use other cube to drop another cube to button.

For second question: It meant to be .bmz file. I don't know why you get zip.. if it is so extract everything into maps folder

And for great feedback: Thank you Yesterday I fix those signs, and now I add final details. maybe I make advanced too. Then I start to plan next puzzle. You can tell what elements you want to it. It maybe take little longer because now my holiday end and school begin.

But anyway, thanks you all for great feedback, I love make them more

Ooops I forgot to ask you couple thinks. First is: I made my elevator door close when I walk away from it and enable collision, but when I walk against door ingame, I stuck on to that area near elevator door, and it says, sever stuck blah blah blah... So is there way to fix that? And another: I added chamber sing, but how can I remove that "/19" after 1?
I tried all skins but it is in all of them..

not sure if im still doing it right...
i used one cube to nudge the other cube around the glass wall onto the spot where the orange portal would open, then i put the other box on the button...

an advanced one would be kool, and cant wait for more chambers
maby u could extend the idea of having the button that destroys the box, and have a more complex puzzle which uses that technique in a different way...

wrong again here is another clue: leave the other cube up there, then jump down to make portal "to there". Then go back and do "that and that" and voila! I make walkthrough video today if you can't solve it.

and that button that destroy cube is good idea bu't I'm not sure have I skills to make it

You need to make your own chamber sign. The original ones are models with everything hard-coded there. However, you could possibly replace the textures in the model skins, but I have never done that, so I don't know the details.

I still got a missing texture (the wireframe thing) in the main room where the camera is.

Otherwise, great map and the advanced chamber was a nice challenge without being too difficult.

(i didnt watch that tutorial because my internet has gone really slow and it wouldnt load that video... lol)

Yeah....ummm, something went wrong. I was playing the map and when i pressed the button and grabbed the cube RIGHT as it was coming out, the hatch stayed open a little longer than normal (maybe cause the cube was in the way?). And for some reason, FIVE more came out! I don't know why this happened.
I just made it into a pyramid for the picture.

Oh that's kinda funny. It's due to that I make it close when cube stop touching the trigger (OnEndTouchAll). It maybe take some time for next update and next puzzle, because summer holiday ended . But , I have planned some parts of my next puzzle to paper. Say what elements you want to it have. boxes&buttons, energy pellets, flinging or something else?

Something simple yet enjoyable, something like this map But please don't make impossible flings and things you have to try over and over to frustrate the player.

Lol failed surface rendering. And the camera can't be shot off. Does the Source engine see render-failed surfaces as portal-proof?
Anyway, nice map despite being short. I'd say it's about as challenging as the original Testchamber 17, except no incinerator. You should make more maps in this series, it's pretty cool.
And "Aperture Science Dark Storage Cube" FTW!

EDIT: After playing this map, all storage cubes throughout the game (even in other maps!) have the dark storage cube skin? How do I fix this? Do I have to change the box skin via the console or something? Help plx.

Why would you want to change the skin?

But if you insist, look for the file in the materials folder (portal/portal/materials) and delete it.

Yeah the black storage cubes are really annoying if you ask me. You might want to use PakRat when putting custom materials in your map, that way they are only used in your map and not the rest of the game.

i agree about not having impossible flings etc...
and to be honest... im not much of a fan of energy pellets
the different cubes and buttons would be kool...

Sounds epic. Please make it challenging but not darn near impossible.

BTW, about the Aperture Science Dark Storage Cube... I think it actually looks better than Valve's version. You can see it better, it looks more epic and new, and most importantly, you don't have to be right on top of it to tell the difference between a WSC and everyone's favorite six-sided buddy.
