Yeah, I'm going to need to find some way to make it look a little less boring.
Cubemaps will help, definitely, but Half-Life 2 doesn't seem to offer too many models that work with the theme I'm going for.

if you're going for a non-boring simplistic theme, i'd suggest some of the smaller white pipe models along the bottom half of the walls, and perhaps recess the lighting a little bit. and in the area with the water, i think adding a dull orange glow from under the water would fit pretty good.

That's because it isn't destruction, its an adaptation of the art therapy style, where parts of the chamber are missing because it is half finished.
