what is your favorite operating system

DOS
(Moved to Off-topic.)
Choosing one option is hard. I use Linux on my laptop for the hardened security (for attaching to unknown access points, etc) and it just feels faster.
But I run Windows XP on my gaming desktop because it's a gaming computer and I've had enough trouble trying to get Steam to run on my laptop. It's also nice for compatibility for stuff like my Zune which just has zero Linux functionality.
There was a similar thread some months ago (I've locked it to prevent necromancy) that made many good points. Highlight, from our good friend Hamster:

I work with Mac's all the time. There are two employees where I'm working right now that are using Macs, with Leopard installed. They have just as many problems as everyone else who's using a Windows PC.
At the music studios I go to, they almost all use Macs. Again, they crash way too often for stupid reasons. I'm talking about the Mixing Room Macs that have nearly nothing on them except for ProTools and Toast.
It's easy to give Finder a heart attack.
All that out of the way, I don't like the design philosophy of modern software. It doesn't matter if it's on a Windows or Mac PC. I don't want this easy and accessible shit. Give me 10 page preference screens and the ability to completely tear-down the program if I want to. I blame that on Apple with their one-button-everything. :E~~

Dosbox ftw, also:
Traditionally using Linux at home has always been for people with a high amount of computer knowledge but that's all changing now. Then again last time I went into Linux (my computer has dual boot) I found myself stuffing around with highly technical driver configuration files just so I could run 3d games on it, so I guess it's still got a way to go.
People should make more games for Linux because there's no reason Microsoft should have a monopoly on gamers.

they don't. they just have a monopoly on the operating system (sorta; they did goto court over it anyway) and the marketers go to where the money is. and to market a game for a system that is on 90% of all home users computers = more money. its the demand/supply system, the demand is for games that run on MS platforms. so there is the supply.
and MS became so popular because it has always been so nerd friendly (if not user friendly) way back in the days of dos. mac was to pretty and user friendly. wasn't easy enough to hack open. yeah if you wanted bad ass grafix or sound you went with mac. but the average computer nerd wanted to be able to "WORK" on his system. the average art nerd wanted easy to use but powerful effects. well computer nerds won the computer war.
Linux - Used it a few times, pretty interesting, doesnt offer me what I want.
Mac - plain old sucks, Ipods suck, Iphones suck, Imacs suck, Ibook SUCKS, Mac sucks cause they charge you up the ass, it isnt widely used, and the user interface for the OS sucks
Windows XP - One of the best Operating systems I ever used, offered everything I needed. Now its obsolete.
Windows Vista - With 4 available version, each with more features and more RAM eating power, how could you go wrong. With Basic, you just wasted money... Windows Vista Home premium is what I use, it has got to be one of the best by far, it outdoes Windows XP in all ways in my view. Vista Business is not something I would recommend getting. Vista Ultimate, the pinnacle of RAM and CPU consumption.
Out of all the Operating systems I would have to go with Vista due to DX10 and epic shininess.

See that's exactly the problem, Vista is the only OS that supports DX10 and you need DX10 for the latest and greatest graphics. Microsoft clearly has an unhealthy stranglehold on the market. And PortalFan77 I disagree with you about Vista being good and about XP being obsolete. I use XP and probably the majority of gamers do due to it using less resources to run. The fact that DX10 only runs on Vista is just a stunt to get more sales for their crappy WAY overpriced OS.
OK I think I've finished my rant now.

I got Vista free with my PC, also XP loses support from Microsoft I think at the end of this year, therefore it is Obsolete. No more support, the XP license wont be sold anymore and it will be "illegal" for companies like Dell, HP, and others to sell XP on their PCs.
Better get with the times
Windows 95 is obsolete because a statistically insignificant portion of users actually run it. Windows XP, not so much. I know that, for me, I have no incentive to upgrade to Vista and specific incentives to stick with XP, so I likely will. I know where everything is and am able to quickly go into power user mode and start tweaking things in XP that I would have to search for in Vista.
And PortalFan77, your post reads like a fanboy screed. You offer no specific criticisms and instead throw things into extreme contrast by simply saying one thing "sucks" and another thing is "best". Without any details or elaboration, this opinion is apparently baseless.
For example, list what it is that Linux doesn't have (gaming, I'm sure). Also, in what ways do you find Vista superior to XP? That sort of thing.
Flame on.

i like the Protos more than the Marines myself... but thats just my opinion.. mostly cuz i like those airships that let out a billion little air attack thingies..
but as far as vista/xp debate goes. i WILL stick with xp-pro cuz its free (ie: came with my system) and its good enough. and everything i ~need~ works with it. when/if i ever buy a new system it will probly have some version of vista on it. so will go with that. but. keep this in mind. My uncle is Retired IBM he's like 70 something but he's still hella 1337 when it comes to computer crap and he ALWAYS has the newest/bestest ext. he had xp before it was released, and he had vista before it was even outta beta (he's got some inside connection where he gets to beta anything he wants basically) anyway. he swears by vista. so. even though i've never used it. i'm sure its what/where it needs to be. just don't use it cuz i ain't paying umpteenbillion dollhairs for any piece of software that comes for free on a "new" system
