I haven't put too much thought into that part yet, but I know that each choice wil have its rewards and consequences.

I was thinking of a single fork with two endings maximum. I don't want to do too much

...Did you have something in mind?

btw I think the 'thicker' part might be a bit hard, because the thickness of those lines is in the geometry of the model. And if I'm going to use a new model, I might as well make my own from scratch.

Oh and would you mind terribly if I asked you to spoiler the word "cube" in your earlier post? I'd appreciate it

Heres a few things you could add to your version of the cube.

||The cube's red part (the eye looking part) should be sticking out a tiny bit, and it should roll around and look at you at all times, as suggested. It should ever now and then gnarl and hiss. If you drop it from a great height, it should scream like "waaaaaaaa -oof" Would be quite comical. Let's face it, nothing really can be evil in Portal. Maybe the cube could also tell you to do the wrong thing which the player blaitently knows is wrong. Such as "Heey, jump in the fiire ehehhe" Weird shit like that.

Also, a cool edition maybe to add a different eye colour to each side of the cube? Like the same colours as the GLaDOS ones.||

I definatly like the idea ofmaking the new cube comical, I think it will be quite hard to make the player 'hate' a cube, although i bet you will prove me wrong.

comical, downright annoying, I dont mind, as long as its done well

Cool ideas Grudge

However ||to make the eye stick out and roll around would invole editing the mesh itself. In fact, it would involve making multiple meshes probably, and as I said earlier, I'd rather start from scratch if I had to do that.

I also have a script prepared too. He's going to be sarcastic and british, so unfortunately the growls and hisses won't be there (Don't want to make it too much like the angry sphere) Oh, and one other aspect of his personality? He has a crush on the turrets

As for his eye colour changing on each side of the cube, that's impossible I'm afraid, since the texture is just one side copied six times onto the mesh essentially. Saves texture memory that way. Although it would be possible if I were to edit the mesh itself (which looks like it's becoming more and more likely)||

edit: Crap, it's half past 1 now. Need sleep before work in 6 hours

edit: oh, and thanks youme could you do the same please grudge? spoilering the word "cube" in your post.

I think ||your prototype cube looks awesome. Especially alongside the other two types of cube, it definitely looks ominous. Plus throughout Portal the portable textures were light and nonportalable ones were dark, so that dark gray metal look ties into the player's association of dark colors with frustration.

I LOLed at Grudge's "jump in the fire" suggestion.||

Don't start second-guessing yourself. This is a good idea, and you've already put significant effort into planning and designing it. I'm psyched to play it!

Thanks Paul it means a lot. I didn't actually think of that light dark thing. I might make the dark bits to be the same colour as the brown unportalable walls if it looks good.

There's one other question I forgot to ask last night:

||What's his name? I want it to sound like a bad guy title, but not come all out and say "Bad guy cube" or "enemy cube". So far I've got:

"Weighted Nemesis Cube
Weighted Rival Cube
Weighted Scoundrel Cube
Weighted Adversary Cube - my favourite so far, don't know why. It just sounds to me like something GLaDOS would say.

Weighted Champion Cube - this one requires a bit of explanation:

This came from the idea that GLaDOS really likes the bad cube. She's proud of it. He's like the favourite child of the cubes in GLaDOS' eyes and she urges you to bond with it. Also champion sounds a bit like companion.

This may change however, I may make it so that GLaDOS sees the cube as the 'black sheep' of the cube family essentially. I've not quite thought GLaDOS' role through properly yet.

Actually, just thinking about it. I think a "bad guy" name is a bad idea, since the player will work that out on their own that he's bad, if I've done this right. So maybe it should be just as friendly a name as "companion", as a dark contrast to his adversarial role in the game. This will also compliment GLaDOS' favourable treatment of him, because she wouldn't really give something she liked, a name like "Adversary".

Weighted Comrade Cube?
Weighted Complement Cube?||

||The Aperture Science Weighted Anti-Companion Cube.

The Aperture Science Weighted Simply-Mad Cube

The Aperture Science Failed Experiment Cube

The Aperture Science Evil Prototype Cube

The Aperture Science GLaDOS Offspring Cube

The Aperture Science Cube

The Aperture Science WrongDoer Cube

The Aperture Science Confused Companion Cube||

Oh btw, I think though it will be hard work to edit the mesh you should do it. It would turn out great and more thanlikely better. I also love the turret crush idea

That leads me to make this name:

The Aperture Science Turret Seduction Cube

I was thinking,

maybe "The Aperture Science Weighted VSHHT Cube". Let the player come up with their own name. If only because there are so many good names and I'm too lazy/indecisive to pick one This way also means I can use GLaDOS' voice to introduce it, since I can only use words she's spoken in the game, and I don't believe she says "nemesis" etc. at any point.

Maybe, that sounds quite good. But the problem with that is players would find it more comical to hear a real name than more likely frustrating not knowing the name of it. Imagine playing Episode 3 for Half Life, then right near the end the big end sequence is about to happen and its like "End" - Valve just want you to think of your own ending.

Yeah you're probably right. I would like to use the "VSHHHT" noises in some places though, because they were quite a good source of humour in the game particularly when she's trying to warn you about something.

When I played through the game the first time and I heard that I was like "But I'm already baked! Wait... how does she know?!" And then I saw the fire and I got it.

Done!

Anyway back on-topic, I have a couple more suggestions for ||cube names:

"Weighted Companion Cube" is actually a pretty boring name if you think about it. It was what GLaDOS said about it that was memorable. The name itself is clinically descriptive, since in that level you do have to keep the CC with you in order to finish the puzzles. You could mirror this approach by figuring out what function your cube serves in its levels and just calling it that, for example "Weighted Anchor Cube" or "Weighted Progress Hindrance Cube" or whatever describes it best.

Or, basically the complete opposite of the previous suggestion, just give it a human name and have GLaDOS refer to it as the Aperture Science Weighted Storage Steve.

I also came up with "The Malicious Superintelligence Supercube" and "The Weighted Pathological Chatterbox [Cube]."||

Are any of those any good?

In some of the things that Paul mentioned, how about having the cube always being there when you don't want it to be there. It is always somehow hindering your progress. ;D

It's blocking a doorway, so you move it to the side, and turn around, and there it is back in front of the doorway! Dun dun DUN!
