Cubemap Crash

This being my first post, I made absolutely sure that the problem was NOT my lack of intelligence. My problem is, in my small, incomplete map, I want to setup cubemaps to learn about them. The thing is, it was working for a while, but now when I go to buildcubemaps hl2.exe stops working.

So what do I do? First I checked for leaks, I did find one so I sealed it. Then I googled and wiki'd the env_cubemap entity to increase my knowledge on the subject. After viewing a few other forum posts...I tried their solutions such as "don't run in window mode...run at lowest resolution" etc. All of these did not effect the problem at all. So after that I made a new map. A simple square room with one info_player_start, one reflective surface, one light and one env_cubemap in it to check if it was a PC problem.

It is a PC problem. However which one is it, and how can it be solved? I asked myself this question then I got the bright idea to sign-up right here...right now...here I am...does anyone have a solution?

I searched the forum for env_cubemap...cubemap error...and cubemap crash but no avail. (I did get a bit carried away by the "Optimization" tutorial. =D)

What are your computer specs, and what resolution are you running the game in?

I have a 3 Ghz Quad Core Phenom II with an onboard HD 4250.
It supports all the latest features. (crossfire excluded obviously)

I've only had problems building cubemaps at the lowest resolution (640x480). It might have something to do with the fact that it's generating a 512x512 texture which doesn't fit on the screen. You probably have, but just in case, did you try a higher resolution or a different aspect ratio?

I am always running at 1440 x 900 but I will try a 4:3 ratio.

EDIT: Nope, still didn't work...

HL2.exe has stopped working. Check for t3h solootionz?

Change your Steam language to English and restart. If you are already in English, switch to another language and back to English then restart steam.

I don't know, I didn't program Steam/HL2 but it fixed the same problem I was having a while back. It just worked

It probably causes steam to redownload all or most of the content for that game. How that helps, I'm not sure.

That's a strange fix indeed. Glad it worked for you though.

My suggestion was also going to be on your resolution. I've always been told to build (default 512x512) cubemaps in 1024 x 768, but either way, glad the problem is solved for you.

Honestly, that has to be one of my favorite fixes of all time. Glad it's working again.
