And all it requires(required) was for X-number of people who have been starved for media to do something for the devs, to prove that they're still waiting.
Something seems wrong to me about that but I can't put my finger on it.

I don't see anything wrong with it. They promised there'd be no media releases because people got too bratty about it, and said 'we'll be updating the main site with new media closer to release.' Go look at the home page. Look at it. Also, read the developer posts. Within the month is my estimate.

Communities that follow games tend to really, truly, suck ass. Those are the breaks. This is true for many movies as well.
People are going to be bratty; either way, showing media, making people "work" for it ("Like this page and get media") or not showing media is going to bring out the crazies one way or another.
I realize that "bratty" people do need to be punished for that every now and then. But in the process of being silent for so long, all of my own personal hype for Black Mesa has died. Like a watered down Duke Nukem game, there is no way in Hell that the mod will live up to all of the hype that it's built. I see very little reason, then, to punish (too strong a word, but work with me) people who have remained hyped about it for so long.

It's hardly punishing though, is it? It's just a few screenshots in the end. It's not work either, it's just liking a page. They're just raising awareness of the mod's (apparently) imminent release, and I don't blame them. I think you're reading too far into this.

I probably am.
Note that I said that "punish" is probably too strong a word, and "work" was and is in quotes.
I can't really blame them for wanting to get the word out, but they've had how many years to get the word out? How many articles have been published about it? The word IS out. They're just expecting more.
But that is just my 2 cents.

Understatement of the century.
All in all though, not really excited over Black Mesa. It's the Duke Nukem effect all over again.
Not that I awaited duke nukem, more like observed it sluggingly finally cross the finish, but still.

Black Mesa hasn't been in development nearly as long a Duke Nukem, and it actually looks like it won't be shitty.
Though, they've "announced release" at least as many times.

For your consideration, I submit Spore.

Allow me to further submit Dead Island

Valve did the same thing with Portal 2; they too had a delay and then made up for it with a lot of publicity before the release.

I don't know if it was just me, but I thought it was a decent length between sequels. There's no way Portal 2 would have been as successful if it had been released a couple of years earlier. The fact it had a huge grassroots following is one of it's main selling points. I also respectfully disagree (I know, right?). Duke Nukem was viewed as a failure because it had a hodge-podge of ideas than didn't work that were added because yolo, and because of that it took a long time. Black Mesa has a far more complete and pre-determined structure to work with, and they are taking their time rather than rushing to add new crazy ideas which is good.
Of course they could have added ironsights and bullet time, idk I haven't played it yet.
