A Word About Alive & Kicking

Basically we're done. And by done, I don't mean the mod is complete. I mean we're done working on it.

With every bit of progress, something goes wrong thanks to Valve thwarting any chance of modding Portal 2. Back when we started the mod, it was basically smooth sailing besides getting custom content to work. But now everything breaks everything else, fixing breaks more, and it's not worth it. What point is there in making a mod if that mod keeps being destroyed?

Hopefully we can work together for a little while longer so that we can upload working maps to the Steam Workshop. Even that I can't promise.

You're kind of undervaluing the amount of work people have put into the mod.

Everyone put a lot of work into the mod. But nobody wants to work on it anymore.

I know everyone worked hard. But just because the work was hard doesn't mean it's finished.

I feel for you. I hated the inevitable feel that my mod was going to be stopped. feels horrible. especially when it's due to coding/game limitations.

Still, it shouldn't be a waste in the end. mine was a huge learning experience. just gotta move on to the next thing

I look forward to trying any levels that are released!

I'm not sure what you mean, honestly. How has Valve broken stuff?

I just don't want this mod to have the most ironic name in history (Alive & Kicking is dead).

woah didn't see this coming O.o

destroy-pdating a game to the point where no one wants to create mods for is something VALVe should be ashamed of. they grew because of the mod community afterall

still, as long as some maps find their way into the workshop the effort will somewhat pay off.

this mod was one of the most anticipated imo

Even modding issues aside, it's hard to feel excited about modding a game that's been dead for a while. I know people do it, but I keep feeling less and less gung-ho about finishing it. Especially since no one else wanted to work on the remaining maps.

I was considering putting out a thing asking for mappers who would be interested in helping finish the mod. Maybe that's something to consider before releasing in alternative form (I don't know how broken mods are...)

Well, to be frank, the Portal series will remain dead until someone does something with it. Valve/3rd Party that doesn't require a peripheral would need to make another DLC in order to get a lot of people back playing Portal 2/Portal (lel) at once; possibly revitalizing interest in websites like TwP and mAI.

This. It'd make people like omi more interested in working with it too, because VR comes right along with Steampipe. Plus, there's all the addons and stuff I imagine you had in mind when you posted that.

Perhaps we could talk to somebody at Valve about it? They seem to not like me anymore since all of my emails in the last 4 months have gone unanswered, so we'd need someone else to send a message along.

You'd think that they would want to make all of the Source games on Steampipe; L4D1 would benefit, Portal 2 would too, and tons of mods could get the support they need. It's a win win honestly.

They're converting them all to that setup as time goes by for Linux compatability. The most popular games and the oldest games are usually the easiest to port, so those go first. That means HL2/L4D2/HL1, and apparently Portal 1. I'm sure they'll get to P2 as time goes on, but it might not be until after CS:GO.

Half-Life Source and Left 4 Dead got skipped, too.

I hope they get to those one day.

Left 4 Dead 1 isn't nearly as popular as 2, and the entirety of 1 is part of 2 at this point anyway. I'd assume its probably one of the lowest on the list.

It's pretty obvious that the more popular games come first. Even Ricochet is in beta.

I'm confused. Isn't portal 2 already steampipe? I thought steampipe was converting all the /username/ games to use /common/ and vpk, both of which already apply to portal 2.

I still maintain that L4D1 is a different beast that deserved a better fate, but that's besides the point.

There are apparently two versions of the VPK format. I assume that HL2 and Portal belong in the Version 2 list but haven't been added.

Hopefully they'll get to Portal 2. I'd really like to see AAK come to fruition after so long.
