I was playing coop with a friend, when he suddenly asked me if I had (and suggested I get) the portal 2 map editor. after further discussion, he gave me this link: http://www.moddb.com/mods/portal-2-map- ... -editor-v1

so, if anyone knows about this, can anyone tell me if it's any good?

I don't know. Judging by its description, it seems like a more "Halo forge" type editor than just using Hammer. If you want to get into actual mapping, I'd just pick up Hammer. It really isn't that difficult to begin with and the amount of information out there on it is incredible.

Yeah both the portal and portal 2 "in-game shoot and place mapping tools" are horrible in many ways, some mentioned in hober's forum link. Examples include:

-No optimisation with func_detail, hint/skip, areaportals...
-No pathing optimisation with playerclips, other clip brushes
-NO BRUSH ENTITIES E.G. TRIGGERS, FUNC_CLIP_VPHYSICS, ETC.
-You can't choose textures.
-You can't texture unseen faces with nodraw.
-I don't think you can do much customization with panels, and don't know if you can do panels at all.
-No logic entites such as math_counters, logic_timers, logic_relays, logic_autos, etc. You are stuck with simple I/O logic.
-Difficult to detail without good rotation tools, vertex editing, overlays...
-very blocky maps due to the square shaped prefab brushes
-No clipping tool! A.K.A. no good walls, no detailed walls, etc.

I think this is enough reasons to use hammer instead of that program, and hammer is very easy to pick up
