5.9 Earthquake hits east coast

Posted Aug 23, 2011
Earlier today, a 5.9 richter earthquake hit in Mineral, VA (not too far from where I live :O ). Not much damage reported, but lots of buildings were evacuated.

Coincidently, a different earthquake hit Colorado before this. Tin foil hats, anyone?

Why does the sky emit weird lights and colors before an earthquake? I've never been in an earthquake (thank Heavens), but I always hear that before an earthquake happens, the sky turns a strange color, like blue or violet. In the Chile earthquake, a strange ring of light was seen in the sky before their earthquake happened. The sky was also reported to be changing colors. In the 1976 Tangshang earthquake, the sky exploded in a purple light before the earthquake struck. I know this happens before all earthquakes and I want to know why. The Wikipedia page on Earthquake lights doesn't give me very much, so I hope someone here can explain it better.

Man, it's never been like that before.

Seriously, there is absolutely no scientific reason for the sky to change colour when there are earthquakes. So I'm going to say No. It doesn't.

EDIT: Done a bit of research and I've seen some pictures of this sort of phenomenom. To be honest, it looks like it only occurs at night and they are very brief flashes. To be honest, it seems more like the flash of light caused by a bang than mysterious sky changes. Oh, and it certainly isn't "all" earthquakes either, nor is it always before.
