hammer loading one map for over 2 hours, help?

Ok, this is really making me upset. the map I have worked extremely hard on is not loading past 5% when I browse for it and open it in hammer. it says "Loading Chunks: 5%" and then It gets stuck. I have tried waiting for it for over 2 and a half hours, and nothing has happened. nothing past 5%.

As with other, more complex maps made by valve, they load really fast. this problem started just today. I had not compiled before shutting down. :blah:

please, if anyone can help, do so. I have worked long and hard on it and would not want it to be wasted. :notworthy:

I have attached the map if it is needed for reference:

Trying to load it crashed Hammer for me @ 5% as well.

Future note to self: Don't load something that someone said is broken while you're working on stuff lol

What's the last thing you did before this started happening?

It's cool, man. I didn't actually "lose" anything (I save a LOT, as should everyone I hope) just the time of loading up Hammer and my whole map again... which my overclocked i7 likes anyway hehe

what i'm wondering now is where everything in the map went. the only things left are things I made in the last session that i used my map and the geometry.

@CaretCaret what did you do to fix it anyway?

Probably it loads from last session is because it didn't save correctly (if it crashed). Remember that Hammer frequently autosaves (look in C:/HammerAutosave) and a .vmx in the same folder as is automatically created whenever you compile your map.

Maybe he edited the vmf in notepad. Burned and destroyed something from there.

Indeed. It was corrupt, at the end of the file it just said NULNULNULNUL... and so on.
Everything you did after putting in some vactube models is gone.

but then how was I able to open it up and edit it before it started the 5% thing? also, I think you meant before putting in some vactube models, because I made the glados chamber after the vactubes.
and why is the brushwork still there?

edit: its not completely gone, because I can still play through the old version of few main rooms i was developing, except without the awesome new stuff I added recently. I can attach the BSP if anyone wants to take a look at its former (unfinished) glory.

so, theres absolutely no way to get my work back?   :angrysquare:

Have you checked the autosaves and the .vmx file, like Chicken said?

Also, you could decompile your .bsp file to get the source back from there.

the bsp is corrupted too, although i can still play it. I havent tried the autosaves or the vmx yet

edit: about the autosaves, I can't find them, where are they?

edit2: I sucessfully managed to recover my map using the vmx!!!!    the new changes I made were saved in the almost empty one and copied in!

@CaretCaret and Robdon Thank you so much!

Yeah, I've noticed that too. Talk about fowl-play when others get credit for chickenmobile's ideas.
