Steam...in linux?

Does anyone know if it's possible to use Steam in linux? I would like to keep working on my map, however, windows screwed up (long lengthy explanation that I don't feel like diving into). Will the source SDK still work? I've yet to try Steam in Wine.

If it helps, I'm running Ubuntu Feisty 7.04 (Gutsy always gives me errors)

Thank you

I tried to install Steam on Feisty with wine a few months ago but it didn't work out. The installer ran fine, but it wouldn't work for some reason (it escapes how at the moment)

Hmm, okay. I'll double check it because I would love to play Portal and the SDK on my PC

I know that people have gotten steam working for Linux fine, but I'm not sure if hammer would work.

Hmm, yeah Wine says it can run steam, I'm just having trouble updating the thing. Oh well, I guess I should just go a looking for my WinXP CD or something til I find a workaround.

I've gotten the src ds doohickey working, running a source dedicated server in TF2, but that doesn't sound like what you want.

you arent going to have very good results running steam in linux. Hammer is already buggy in windows. It will be epic buggy in linux being emulated.

I would say

Steam: Probably
Hammer: Probably not
Games themselves: No chance

There are linux versions of the dedicated servers available so thats not a problem.

Steam and Portal do in fact work.
Steam: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... n&iId=1554
Portal: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... n&iId=9432

The newest version of Hammer doesn't want to play nice, it seems: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... on&iId=469

I can update this a bit from personal experience.

I got steam running on Gutsy (Ubuntu 7.10), with Blue Shift and Half Life 1, which is all I've tried on my laptop. If I had more hours in the day I might try i on my gaming rig, but not likely to happen until Windows FUBARs me again.
