How to get publicity?

This is maybe a silly question, but I have to ask. Nobody recognizes my maps, but I think there are good compared to most maps out there, even if they are PTI maps. There are so many maps that mine disappear in the crowd. Maybe you can give me some tips on how I can show maps to more people.

Thanks

How to get publicity: DON'T MAKE PTI MAPS!

There are 42 000 maps out there. Most of them are crappy PTI maps that takes 2 minutes to solve. Now that's not me saying that your maps suck, maybe they have good puzzle elements and innovative use of the map editor. But you won't get recognized by doing those types of maps. Look at CaretCaret and 12 angry tests. He has over 8000 followers because he uploaded 5 Hammer-made maps at the start the PTI.

Hammer-made maps will get more attention then PTI-made ones. This is just my theory on the subject though...

The best way to get publicity for your map:
* Make a good map
* Poke friends, let them play.
* Put a post in this thread: community-releases/post-your-workshop-maps-here-t6133.html
* Upload your workshop map as an external download here on twp
* Listen to feedback and improve your map if required.

@logic; you're behind: not 42000, it's over 80.000 now

If you really want your PTI maps to work then do what Ipfreaky said. I'm a bit negative when it comes to using the PTI as the full editor and just not as a tryout-tool for puzzles ideas like I do x)

You only dont like PTI maps, because everybody can use PTI, but there are also people like me who can make challenging PTI maps. But I have an Idea, Ill just port them to Hammer maps and upload it as hammer maps. Thanks

I don't like PTI maps because you can't make any details, just big chunky blocks and weird looking indicator lights. You can't make a map with a personal touch.

Don't just port the map into Hammer and post it as a Hammer map without changing anything. That's not good...

Yes, I will change music and stuff and delete some indicators, but thats the best way for me! Working with Hammer takes too much time for me, because Im not that experienced yet. But making the map with PTI and the finishing it with Hammer is a great idea I think!

I dont know if people look for collections as much but there are a lot less of those to "compete" with.

That's a good way to piss the admins off and get banned, especially if you don't make any changes at all. Even if I've tidied up the indicator lights, implemented some new logic and made some cosmetic changes in Hammer (like in my Gymnasium and Jam maps) I've still uploaded as PTI, because that's where the bulk of it comes from. The only PTI-to-Hammer converted map I've uploaded as a full Hammer release is my Oval Window, and that's because I put a lot of hours into overhauling the visuals (and eventually also completely redid the main puzzle thanks to Logic's feedback).

I also think it's a shame that PTI maps are almost always dismissed as inferior to Hammer ones; to think of a couple of examples, Djinndrache and zivi7 have both done fantastic stuff in the PTI editor that I'd say stands up against any of the Hammer maps I've played. I understand it, though; most PTI maps I've played are indeed rubbish, with the average Hammer map being at least playable. The only thing you can do really is keep out there, post to the site, and try to make a name for yourself - to me that means not only posting on your own maps but to give as much feedback as possible to others. People are much more likely to want to help you out and play your stuff if you're taking the time to do the same for them.

The PTI is a tool that allows everyone to make maps and well, it does take away a bit of the pride of mapping. But on the other hand the steam workshop makes it easier then ever to share maps, which is an amazing thing! I've played through over 200 PTI maps since it's been released and most of them are bad for a bunch of reasons:
1) Annoying timing, for me portal is a puzzle game, not a mouse speed game.
2) Way too big maps. This is an error a lot of new map makers make, same in hammer, but the PTI often makes maps bigger then they need to be.
3) Playgrounds. Hammer playgrounds are bad, PTI playgrounds are horrible. At least hammer took a bit of skill...
4) Dumb maps. I've seen maps where I could just walk to the exit, or with two portals or walk in and see the solution.
5) Too dark maps. In hammer lighting is not the easiest thing, but come on, PTI maps you have to play with fullbright...

There are however a couple of gems, maps that are really worth a play, but it's searching for a needle in a haystack unfortunately.

I've only seen about 10 challenging maps: maps that require you to think. A lot of "hard" maps are either:
1) Super speed timing (not a puzzle)
2) You've got to watch out for turrets (they are annoying, they don't make your map harder, you should be able to take them out easily.)
3) A big maze where you have no freaking clue on where you are supposed to end up and you have almost every test element at your disposal.

It's too easy to spot PTI maps: they're often too big, the lighting is off and the brushwork immediately gives it away. I would highly recommend uploading maps that came from the PTI to the PTI section, otherwise a moderator or admin will move it to the correct location.

Ok thanks people! Im going to convert maps to hammer, but upload them as PTI. The good thing is, that I can change the Thumbnail in the workshop, which makes them more outstanding . I think thats the best way.

@lpfreaky - I just noticed going through the Collections that you've got a Thinking With Portals PTI collection up there. What are your criteria for inclusion? Are you playing through all those maps yourself and just putting up the good ones? And are they pulled from the Download Database here or from the Workshop maps thread, or both?

The playlist I made contains all the maps that were put in the thread I started: community-releases/post-your-workshop-maps-here-t6133.html I still haven't added the newest maps but I hope to do that this weekend.

I'm also planning on playing through them all and make a list of my personal favorites and make a separate collection for that

lpfreaky, you should create a collection for "PTI Spotlight" maps that I can link to on here.

I don't think I've ever laugh so hard in a long time. BTW msleeper, I didn't know that you are a Peanuts fan.
Even though I'm not in a proper position to offer a suggestion to the PTI Spotlight, especially since it's one of my maps, but I will say out of the six maps I've made so far, ML's Testing Chamber 5 is my personal best (for the PTI).
