Hey everybody. I haven't seen any topic's for this, only the favorite maps topic, so I wanted to start one for fun. If I am wrong and there already is one, I apologize.

What is your favorite portal theme?

My favorite is Old Aperture and Behind the Scenes because of the visuals.

Old aperture.
I specially love the maps where you can see that there used to be a way to solve it without a portalgun but since it's broken you can't anymore and you need to "cheat" with portals :3

I think I love every single theme. Old Aperture was awesome to play through the first time though...

I like Old Aperture/Underground just because of the music, look, and the feeling of success when completing a puzzle that you don't get from the other themes.

Each theme has it's own unique characteristic. For me personally, I don't have a favorite, I just go with what's easier to create.

Wheatley style is my favorite. It's a nice twist when you realize you won't get dissolved in an acidic pit of goo, but instead fall straight to your death. I also love seeing the vast vistas of Aperture. They are a pain to attempt optimize though and I've never been quite good at that.

Note to self, make more Wheatley styled chambers.

My favorite would either be Wheatley or Destroyed. Why not both? But I agree with RubyCarbuncle about the Wheatley chambers, it's nice to be able to see the whole of Aperture. But for the Destroyed, I somewhat Like the organic feel and the ambiance.

overgrown/reconstructing.

Everything's more dynamic like Wheatley's Chambers, but not too big.

Contrary to popular opinion, I'm actually not a big fan of old aperture. It feels very makeshift and lacking in style. One may argue that a lack of style comes with the time setting, but I don't think that is the case. Bioshock, for example, is a game that executes a 40s/50s art direction with some serious class.

I'm not at all saying I hate old aperture, mind you, I'm simply suggesting that it isn't as mind blowing as so many people claim.

As for my favourite theme, I would have to say overgrown. The juxtaposition of straight, rectangular, artificial surfaces with the rough, random and beautiful organic influence of nature is (in my opinion) almost perfectly executed. It's the first theme the player encounters and thus it needs to have the veneer of Portal 1's chamber style while actually being quite different. It feels both familiar and and foreign at the same time.

It is truly an example of art direction done right; it still surprises me that I am one of the few people who feels this way.

Personally, I like the Clean / Reconstructing theme. It has the futuristic feel in it.

My favourite theme is definitely overgrown, followed by the bts theme. I also don't like Old Aperure, it is somewhat too undesigned.

Quite a hard decision. All of the themes are great. Though I do have more of a liking towards the overgrown and clean Aperture style.

There actually really isn't a "clean aperture" anywhere in the campaign. It's all "Destroyed, Reconstructing, BTS, Old Aperture, Wheatley Aperture" I don't like to do just "Clean" theme because it's pretty much just a bland level, not much detailing.

My favorite styles to map in would have to be either destroyed or wheatley aperture for the two very different styles of destroyed test chambers. In Wheatley's it seems very futuristic and dynamic, while in destroyed, the overgrown nature theme, as well as broken, tilted panels and grunge makes the atmosphere very interesting.

I think, the test participants who tested in the Old Aperture area had a portalgun. A sign in the game shows that. I made a screenshot of it.
The spoiler is only for spaaaaaaaaaaaace reasons.

Screenshot

My favourite themes are Old Aperture, the background area and the rebuilding facility.

She was talking about other areas, parts of the theme where you basically "cheat" with a portal gun. It was once passable without one, but since the place is all broken now, you have to use portals.

Ah, yes, I see. Sorry.
