Every time I play Portal 2, it keeps crashing to the desktop. I'll just be playing a map when it will lock up. Sometimes it will start working again after a few seconds, other times, it will sit for a few seconds, the sound will stop, I get a blank screen, and it takes me to the desktop. No error message or anything. I tried checking the game cache. It found a few missing files that it then re-downloaded, but I am still having crashes. Please help!

continue to verify until it doesn't find any problems
then if you still are crashing check your portal 2 directory for a dump file with a timestamp of your crash and upload it here so I can look at it

Are you on mac? If so this problem has been happening for a few days to all mac users of Portal 2 and Valve does not seem to have fixed it yet.

No, I am not on a mac.

Having the same problem as the original poster except for me it always crashes to desktop, also afterwards my Steam application freezes and I have to Alt+F4 it.

will verify gamecache and see if that helps, though i doubt it.

I kept verifying the game cache until it found no errors, but it uninstalled the BEE mod. I just installed it again and it is no longer locking up!

Mine still crashes even after I verified the game cache... I haven't installed any mods at all.

C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Portal 2, I can't seem find any dump file here, what is the name?

It's crashing again! I just verified the game cache yesterday, and I haven't played the game since. Today I got on to edit a co-op map I'm working on when it crashed to the desktop. I tried again and had the same result. HELP!

Is this just on portal 2, or other games? This was happening to me once, and I was able to uninstall and reinstall steam to solve it. Just remember to back up your important files. (Maps, demos, ect.)

It was only Portal 2. Could I just re-install Portal 2, not Steam as well? That would be a lot easier. Also, does Steam Cloud backup your PTI maps? If not, where are they located on the hard drive?

And no, Steam cloud doesn't back up your PTI creations by default, I believe you have to do it manually.

Try clicking here. Thats for Nvidia, not sure if there are any other graphic drivers,

I tried this before and for some reason it couldn't detect my video card. I tried it again by clicking on your link, which took my to the same page that I went to, and it worked. I'll try installing it and see if that fixes anything.

EDIT: Still crashing! Any more ideas?

I have a co-op map I want to finish, but I can't because it keeps crashing.
