env_laser glitch

I had placed several env_lasers in my map at the beginning, had them all tricked out and working perfectly, but when i had to move an entire room with the lasers, something weird happened. The endsprite that is created at the end of the laser is not directly in the same spot as the target... its actually several feet adjecant to it now. I don't know how that happened, but even after editing, replacing, and make a new map file with new lasers and everything, this issue keeps repeating itself

This sounds really odd - even resetting the lasers does this you say?

I would try and look for any 'red' keyvalues which popped up in your entity and remove them.

alt+P (check for problems) is a good bet as well.

Check that your target is not parented or have a duplicate name as another entity. Duplicate entities' names are bold and can be find by pressing the 'mark' button.

Delete the endpoint, see if the laser still shows up?

What happens if you disable and re-enable the lasers when they get to where they're supposed to go?

After much manipulation, I could not get it fixed. Thankfully I saved an older backup file for the map just for when things get this ugly. All I have to do is remove everything but the functional lasers from the old map, remove the glitched lasers from the newer map, and then paste room after room into the old map. Then once it is all aligned into correspondance to the laser, that I will NEVER touch again, I just save it as a new file.

EDIT: And yes, everything compiled perfectly like nothing ever happened.

Thank you! I always thought this one was Alex Bell too!

@Fracture: one question, why don't you use the env_beam entity instead? I read somwhere that the env_laser doesn't work properly into Portal2 but I can seem to remember where exactly or why exactly. I don't know what you are attempting to create but the env_beam is great, even if you need it to damage the player... For your problem, the only thing that comes to mind is to 'center origins', try just in cases...

I thought that was obvious, especially after this post.

Other way around. Env_beam is broken, env_laser works.

Try just making the laser, and not setting the end sprite. Then, manually put your own sprite in.

Sorry to keep coming back, but I just had a brain wave.

What if you put some different lasers somewhere, made them a template, and spawned the lasers where he lasers are supposed to go? Just forcespawn them and kill/disable your other lasers.

...I....already fixed the problem.....so...yeah

though I wish they would fix all these bugs and glitches in Hammer. I seriously wish i could preview all audio files without having to go to the wiki. And how about finding nodes without volumes? How does one even do that?

Really? I've never gotten an env_beam to work after the DLC2. Would you mind sharing your settings?
