Black screen of death.

So, I'm new to this forum. If i posted this in the wrong place tell me.

My cousin has been trying, to no avail, to fix a hammer glitch. When we load the map, we get a black screen. We're uploading it to the Steam workshop from Hammer as either a VMX or a VMF, and neither works. So because of this, my cousin (Who shall henceforth be called, simply, Mint to avoid revealing ANYTHING) has a worthless map. Any help is appreciated.

Neither .vmf nor .vmx is what you need to play the map. That's just the file to edit the map in Hammer. To actually make it playable in Portal, you need to open the .vmf in Hammer and compile it to create a .bsp-file. That .bsp-file is also the one you'll upload to the workshop once you're happy with the map.

Hmm.... Okay. Mint compiled it. (Or so I'm told). But i was also told that another map that was uploaded was in vmf form.

No, that isn't possible for the Workshop. VPK should be, which would be map packs with lots of custom resources, but it isn't either.

What is the VMX file supposed to be in general?

Okay, so I just found out, it worked fine before the Cave Johnson quote got disabled by Mint. Could attempting to disable it break the map?

Did you happen to delete the instance global_ents.vmf?
As long as we don't have the vmf it's just guessing

Type in the console sv_cheats 1
then type in mat_fullbright 1

Are you standing in a small black box?

Well, while Mint works that out, I'll ask; Would that happen if the screen goes black BEFORE actually loading the map? If you're familiar with the way the screen melts away like tiles flipping over, and how it then goes black, i can tell you THAT'S where it starts having issues. Once all the tiles flip, it stops. Can't pause, or anything, and gotta close Portal 2.

It's giving three out of three people trouble, and we can play other maps.

Mint would rather not, but CAN start over.

maybe just sent the vmf. Either put it as an attachment to your post or just sent it to me in a pm.

So, i asked what Mint did to disable the Cave quote, and was told that tutorials were followed. This is what was done. (In the form of an answer)

Quote:
okay: I simply went on to the func_instance (which the VMF filename is set to instances/p2editor/global_pti_ents.vmf.) and changed: $disable_pti_audio to: 1

Would this mess it up?

We're having trouble getting it to me, so it could be a few days.

If anyone else has ideas, i'm still open

try uploading it to a random filesharing website. that generally works, or sent it in an e-mail or whatever
