4 player multiplayer? Pfft. It can handle the processing power of more people, its the NETCODE that cant.

This thing could take a VERY long time. The last mod that had portal mp took about a year, but that was using the hl2 mod sdk rather than portal.

Yeah true, but the fact that this is the real portal, mean theres far more code to implement. Also having multiple portals up at once is another thing that becomes a problem, Portal still has FPS Issues with portals open, Imagine more than 5 open in a single Vis Leaf. The horror.

I personnally don't think it is worth the effort. It will be very hard to do and probably not be very fun.

"Portal multiplayer" is to me as absurd as "Monkey island multiplayer" or "Tetris multiplayer" or "Tomb raider multiplayer"...

Exploration and puzzle aren't multiplayer experiences, IMO. And that is precisely the spirit of portal.

Portal multiplayer isnt absurd, its just got to be well managed to make sure you don't end up with sludgy framerates.

They guy has already succefully made it so that people can walk through Portals, he is just working out a few bugs and such.

I think Portal Multiplayer wether it is co-op, ctf, or deathmatch will be freakin awsome. I mean come on, think about it, the posabiltys....

I know a guy who is an amazing programmer, and he does games for fun.

His code is professionnal quality, and he plays with complex math like the voronoi diagram easily.
But his games aren't really enjoyed by the players, they are not very fun. even if they are technically impressive.

Because you can code something doesn't mean it will be fun.

Just listen to the audio commentary of Portal : making sure the very single rooms of portal are fun and understandable was a crapload of work for valve's game designers...

I don't believe amateurs will be up to the task of doing this job for the multiplayer, which is even more complex.
Of course, if they prove me wrong, then it's perfect. But my first opinion on this whole "portal multiplayer" is that it has much more probability of sucking hard than anything else.

Hey you could be right, I hope and very well think that Portal MultiPlayer will be a sucess if they manage to do it correctly.

I remember a year before Portal came out playing Exite online(for those who don't know Exite was a Half Life 2 Mod that emitated Portal and you could even play it online) and having so much fun spawning Portals under people and setting traps for them and shooting them through the Portals and the maps I was plalying on then were utter crap.

I would love to do co-op maps or some sort of racing game to the finish useing Portals to find the quickest root to the end.

Only time will tell, but this whole Portal thing is open for a lot of stuff...

Well, IF Portal Online becomes a succes, I'm sure there are mappers around here who can make some nice, fun-to-play maps for it. I already have ideas for MP-Portalmaps.

Hyakkidouran you are very down beat.

I am sure there will be a mod made in the next few months that is a functional two or more person portal game.
Once that has happened its up to the mappers to make the other stuff so it wont be a crap load of work for the modders.

There's nothing to be exited about here. There's no pictures of it. No videos. No notes on how it will work. Nothing. Just a bunch of copy+pasted pictures from portal and a logo, along with some forums (which, by the way, has like 5 threads. Not even the "portal online" thread has ANYTHING about it except a link back to the main page). How do we know this is even a real project and not some joke?

Also, you spelled "coming" wrong in the topic title.

Dang my bad man, thanks for pointing that out.

You could be right, that whole site could be bogus, just some pathetic guy who has no life decided to make some site declaring Portal would be Online cause he has nothing better to do.

I really don't think its a joke, cause if it is, its a very pointless joke and not very funny or clever at all.

Well, maybe it's a guy who doesn't want to tell too much yet but already wants to make some kind of expectation for when his mod is launched. Then again it's totally pointless to make such a useless website. Even my website got more information about SkyLabs, and that project hasn't even really gained speed!

After being informed of a mistake people usually choose to rectify it

Correct(bolded words).

I am the creator of that so "pointless website". Its hosted for free, so what do i care?

The project is coming along nicely but i needed some input from people that play portal. No further information will be given other then what is located in the "News" Section on the website. I'm happy so see that other people are posting and talking about portalmultiplayer.com thats the reason i made it, for the word to get spread.

If you guys have any questions or ideas please post them! you can also post them on the portalmultiplayer forum.

Thanks,
-E3pO

I have a question:

What exactly does 'coming along nicely' mean?

thats an EXCELLENT question considering the "video update" looks just like a regular portal level... played like portal single player... but with a "Portal Multiplayer" menu....

I think this needs to be repeated.

you have a two minute video, the first minute shows you loading portal with an ever so slightly different menu (whoopdedoo! I've already done this for TS13) and then the second half shows you running around a normal portal level, there is no second player, which presumably is a key part of multiplayer you you've uploaded a video to youtube to essentially tell us nothing.
